3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 Strykzone (3816) - Wood River, Illinois, USA - JUL 30, 2011
Bottle. This pours a very dark with red. A thick two finger tan head. The aroma is big sweet chocolate and the flavor s the same. That is supplemented by spicy and mildly bitter hops. Coffee and roasted notes emerge as the beer warms and the finish was ashy. This is somewhat complex and almost cloyingly sweet.

Aroma of rich coffee and dark chocolate, darkest brown, pours a slight toffee head. Flavour is a full roasted malt, dark chocolate too. Full bodied, bitter as hell. Fabulous! Thanks Torontoblue.

Portland, Or - John’s Marketplace - 12 oz bottle. Dark as night black pour, sticky khaki head that leaves behind sticky lacing. Aroma has some licorice accents, a touch of dark unsweetened chocolate. Flavor is bold with some creosote notes, a bit of espresso, some licorice and a bit of a fruity back end. Mouthfeel is clean and slick. Very nice.

On tap at Hamilton’s. Pours with a black body topped by a thick, light brown, lasting head with a good amount of lacing. It’s slightly sweet and roasty with a nice matl note and a bitter sweet chocolate note that leans more towards the bitter. Full bodied and smooth.

Bottle:   Black, moderate foamy beige head, so-so lacing.   Rich roasted malt nose, slight dark chocolate.
Rich roasted malts on the tongue, light hoppiness, a bit of bakers chocolate.   Moderate to full body and
mouthfeel.   Moderate to full body and mouthfeel.   Strong roastiness, mild sweetness, a bit of coffee and bakers
chocolate.   A solid Stout, but not as sweet as other Foreign Stouts.   Very well built however!

A reasonably soft pour produces a full, three-finger thick, deeply browned, creamed-cocoa colored head. The beer is opaque and quite black, though it does show hints of rubies in its depths if you hold it directly up to the light. My first smell of the aroma yields aromatics that are not nearly as burnt / roasted as I was expecting, instead a mix of sweet, dark malt and aromas of dark chocolate are what I first notice. Subsequent draughts of the aroma yield toasty grain-husk aromas, a touch of roast charcoal, a hint of burnt acidity, some dark roast coffee aromas and perhaps a hint of burnt fruit character. The aroma, while characterful, is a bit more subdued than I would expect of a stout of this strength; it is actually in a way nice that it is not bowling me over.
Sweet, dark chocolate and malt notes up front yield to a drying, roast coffee finish. The finish lingers for quite some time with a roast grain bitterness and a touch of burnt acidity; though the bitter, burnt grain character is really what lingers on in the palate after the beer has slid down ones throat. I really like the rich, chewy malt decadence that starts out each sip, but after a bit the finish gets a little too sharp and burnt. Pretty well carbonated, but the texture of this beer is creamy enough that the carbonation is only lightly noticed. The beer is certainly chewy and thick, though it is not overly so; this is a good beer to have one pint of when you only want one.
A nice beer. It get a bit less harsh in the finish as the beer warms up. The dark, sweet malt character becomes a bit more apparent throughout the flavor profile, which is what helps to mitigate the burnt bitter notes of the finish. A tasty beer I would be happy to have again.

now this is a great stout--nothing too spectacular, but wonderful nonetheless: faint nose and aroma that parrots the flavor; black body with a great cascading brown head that likes to sparkle; nice, balanced flavor of roasted chocolate overall, notes of peanut and firewood as well...

Tap at Blind Tiger and Barcade. Pitch black with a thick creamy tan head. Aroma is quite nice, milk chocolate, toasted malt, malted milk and a soft earthy roastiness as well. A bit of chewy sweetness on the back. Espresso roastiness and a lightly smoky and charry finish. Fairly hoppy on the back which helps dry out the stickiness. Quite tasty really.
