East Village Pilsner -
What Fizzy Yellow Beer should be!

I believe that "Fizzy Yellow Beer" can and should be full of life and flavor unlike domestic mass produced, mundane, lifeless, boring, bland, fizzy yellow, insipid swill that takes up cooler space and tap handles at our local markets, pubs and restaurants. San Diego’s East Village is full of life and Green Flash is adding flavor to this burgeoning neighborhood with "East Village Pilsner". It’s made from premium European Pilsner Malt and Noble Hops. Traditional Pilsner lager yeast ferments the beer and imparts a clean flavor, yet unique character during the one-month lagering period. Of course our East Village Pilsner has a bit more hop than even the best European examples, which makes it truly a Green Flash Original. 5.3% ABV – 35 IBUs.

Enjoyed on tap in a tulip glass. The beer pours a nearly totally translucent straw-colored yellow, with a moderate white head. The nose shows a grainy/bready pilsner malt character, along with a noticeable underlying note of earthy noble hops. The palate shows bready/crackery continental malt sweetness up front, followed by an assertive level of bitterness, and an earthy hop flavor. Carbonation and mouthfeel are pleasant and appropriate to style. The finish is moderately bitter, and quite dry. Overall, a nice example of the style from a brewery showing its range.

tap at RnH - a little underattenuated for a pilsner. clean, banana and grainy, a little cloying and malty.

Draft. Pours a golden body with a white head with no lacing to speak of. Dusky, grainy cereal notes and biscuit tones. Light crisp grain malts a bit dank. Alright for a pils.

Tap @ Toronado. Pours a clear pale yellow with a small bubbly white head. Nose of cereal grain, cornmeal, and grassy hops. Pretty tasty for the style.

On tap at Stone. Clear gold, white head. Light malt, grass, and some citrus and malt. Very light and easy drinking, but pretty good flavor. I like my beers to be bigger, but this was fine.

Cloudy golden color. Chalk white head. Very grassy, huge hoppy nose. Massive grassy hop attack in the mouth. Full on hop assault and one of the hoppiest palates I’ve come across. A touch of diacetyl, that somehow adds to this beer! Bitterness is unfathomable to any regular drinker of yellow fizzy beer. IBU stands for I Beat U with hops sucker. This is a Bohemian Pils on ’roids. Marion Jones drinks this shit everyday I am sure!

Hazy yellow-orange hue, very thin white ring of foam. Nose is spices, pale malt, grass. Flavor is pale and toast malts with a big bitterness amped by the carbonation, grassy hop flavor and high bitterness, finishes dry. Light body, high carbonation, slick texture. A flavor packed Pilsner, just outside the session abv range, still quite drinkable and a nice variation on the style.
