East Village Pilsner -
What Fizzy Yellow Beer should be!

I believe that "Fizzy Yellow Beer" can and should be full of life and flavor unlike domestic mass produced, mundane, lifeless, boring, bland, fizzy yellow, insipid swill that takes up cooler space and tap handles at our local markets, pubs and restaurants. San Diego’s East Village is full of life and Green Flash is adding flavor to this burgeoning neighborhood with "East Village Pilsner". It’s made from premium European Pilsner Malt and Noble Hops. Traditional Pilsner lager yeast ferments the beer and imparts a clean flavor, yet unique character during the one-month lagering period. Of course our East Village Pilsner has a bit more hop than even the best European examples, which makes it truly a Green Flash Original. 5.3% ABV – 35 IBUs.

This has a light sweet flavor, yet looks almost flat. Light toasty with hops. Not bad for a light beer. increases in hops flavor as you drink

A: The pour is a lightly hazed golden color with a big white head. S: Like many good lagers, this one starts off with a sweet bread note and a touch of hops. The hops are floral and earthy with just a mild grass note. A bit of lager yeast and biscuit malts, perhaps a light adjunct note. T: Unfortunately, not quite as good of a flavor. It features a mild bitterness as well as some straw and grass. There is a light fruitiness of esters as well as some actual yeast. The base is sweet bread, but it lacks the biscuit quality of the nose. M: Light in body with a medium level of carbonation. O: It’s too bad this didn’t taste quite as good as it smelled. Overall, though, a pretty decent beer.

On tap@Green Flash Mira Mesa: Pale hazy yellow color with a medium eggshell white head. Aroma is lightly sweet and grainy. Flavor starts lightly sweet and seltzer like followed by grain and a hint of citrus ending in a lightly bitter somewhat dry finish. Light body is spritzy with lively carbonation.

On tap at Urge in RB/Poway on the Tap Takeover night. They had 20 different brews from Green Flash that day. This is what it is. The only suprise to me is that the ABV is so high. Light and malty and sweet hay. People like this, but not me.

I love that this beer is a dig on Greg, the owner of Stone. Don’t get me wrong, I love Stone beers (well, a lot of them anyway), but I am not into the whole Arrogant Bastard, gargoil devil schtick. It’s a pilsner and a pretty darn good one, especially for SoCal where everyone is trying to make them bigger and heavier. I put it a notch above Mama’s Lillte Yella Pils from Oskar Blues and a healthy notch below Prima Pils from Victory.

Tap at green flash. Pours a lightly hazy golden with a bubbly white head. Aroma of noble hops and bready malt. Reminds me of sly fox pikeland...which is a good thing. Flavor of the same. Dry, crisp and noble hoppy.

Ah fizzy yellow beers are for wussies! This is a homage to stone brewery as explained by employees at green flash. The first time i had it i was impressed and it enjoyed it very much. It was the first batch. Second time around i wasnt so impressed. This pils is extra hoppy but doesn’t do it for me. It has a very strong wheat edge to it that leave a bad taste in my mouth. Is it better than bud, absolutely. Is it better than arrogant bastard, no way! So basically this was a solid attempt to make a fizzy yellow beer to be enjoyed and it is a quality beer but I just don’t lime it anymore.

On tap at Tyler’s in Durham. Maybe it’s because of the dearth of fresh, hoppy, unfiltered pilsners around here, but I slurped this one down and loved every bit of it. Grassy and floral hops, mild citrus notes. Pours hazy bright yellow and tasted damn good.
