East Village Pilsner -
What Fizzy Yellow Beer should be!

I believe that "Fizzy Yellow Beer" can and should be full of life and flavor unlike domestic mass produced, mundane, lifeless, boring, bland, fizzy yellow, insipid swill that takes up cooler space and tap handles at our local markets, pubs and restaurants. San Diego’s East Village is full of life and Green Flash is adding flavor to this burgeoning neighborhood with "East Village Pilsner". It’s made from premium European Pilsner Malt and Noble Hops. Traditional Pilsner lager yeast ferments the beer and imparts a clean flavor, yet unique character during the one-month lagering period. Of course our East Village Pilsner has a bit more hop than even the best European examples, which makes it truly a Green Flash Original. 5.3% ABV – 35 IBUs.

Fizzy goodness. Good body (not as much as mama's) but excellent! Would recommend. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Name appropriate...accept at least they add some decent hops. It’s still a too lagerific for me, but at least it’s fresh and has a little pop.

Enjoyed a pint of this beer on tap in San Diego. The beer had a clear solid gold color with a good-sized foamy white head with good retention, lacing, and cling. Its aroma was a light mix of sour grainy and earthy notes with subtle bits of yeast, floral, and straw components. The taste was crisp and had a lightly sweet fruit effect with a touch of lemon and a very light grainy bitterness. The body of the beer was light and zesty on the palate with low carbonation, and was a touch watery with a thin and light mouthfeel.

(Draught, labeled East Village Pilsner) Pours a clear yellow body with a medium white head. Aroma of grain, lemongrass, florals, grain, and light white pepper. Flavor of grain, lemongrass, and earthiness with a dry, crisp bitterness in the finish.

A clear yellow colored beer, with a white head. The aroma fruits like citrus with some bitterhop. The taste of fresh fruits, malt and bitter hop. The aftertaste is sweet with a hop bitter. It’s a refreshing beer, with hot wheather.

This poured a cleary fizzy yellow with a white head. Aroma was of ilsner malt, grassy hops, and not much else. Flavor was a bit bland and a little buttery and skunky, missing that nice crispness and cracker notes that a good pilsner should have.

On tap at Papago a few months back pouring up crystal clear deep gold with a decent enough white head of foam. The aroma has sweet malts, a modest level of grainy malts and floral hops. The taste delivers straight up lagery flavors with sweet Pilsener malts, lagery yeastiness and then heading into various levels of floral hops that go from fairly bitter to flavor and then back to bitter again. The bitter floral hops are what mostly linger into the after taste. Decent enough Pils but not my favorite as this one seems a little too sweet and too floral for my taste.

On tap at Green Flash. Pours a clear golden with a foamy white head. Aroma of grass, hay, and some light citrus. Thin body with a light mouthfeel. Medium carbonation. Bready, grainy, and cracker like malt character with a dry clean finish. No hops to speak of.

Sampled at Blind Lady Ale House; July 2012
The beer has a nice, bright gold color to it and it is topped by a frothy, pale head. Lemony hop, some sweet grain / corn aromatics that mix with an interesting herbal component. The DMS (?) is a bit too much in the nose, and it seems to get in the way of the rest of the aromatics.

Nicely bitter, with a soft, grainy and cracker like malt character. The hop character is quite herbal, a bit floral, and even a bit spicy. The body has some texture to it, enough to make this interesting, it certainly doesn’t come off as being watery at all. The pale malt character is quite nice; there are herbal honey like notes to it, as well as a nice, sweet, chewy pale maltiness.

A fairly nice example of a pils; the only detraction is the touch of corn-character (perhaps a touch of residual DMS), but this really doesn’t detract too much and the hop character, and especially the rest of the pale malt character helps this to recover quite a bit. The texture is also just about perfect, light with just enough malt fullness to keep it balanced.
