East Village Pilsner -
What Fizzy Yellow Beer should be!

I believe that "Fizzy Yellow Beer" can and should be full of life and flavor unlike domestic mass produced, mundane, lifeless, boring, bland, fizzy yellow, insipid swill that takes up cooler space and tap handles at our local markets, pubs and restaurants. San Diego’s East Village is full of life and Green Flash is adding flavor to this burgeoning neighborhood with "East Village Pilsner". It’s made from premium European Pilsner Malt and Noble Hops. Traditional Pilsner lager yeast ferments the beer and imparts a clean flavor, yet unique character during the one-month lagering period. Of course our East Village Pilsner has a bit more hop than even the best European examples, which makes it truly a Green Flash Original. 5.3% ABV – 35 IBUs.

Pint at The Market on Washington. Labeled Green Flash Pilsner. I assumed this was going to be a strongly hoppy and dry pilsner. I was wrong. While not awful, this one doesn’t have a great hop potency like Sam Adams Nobel Pils, for instance. The aroma is mildly bitter with notes of corn and crackers. There is decent generic beer flavor with hints at cereal and corn. It’s not really bad. I wouldn’t call it great, either.

Tap at the Ginger Man, NYC, 18/05/13 labelled as ’East Village Pilsener’. Clear pale golden with a thin white head. Nose is pale malts, grass, citrus, sugars. Taste comprises citrus, light sugar, bread, touch of hops. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, crisp finish with light bitterness. Ok pils.

Clear golden with a thin cap of white head. Plain pilsner nose of blonde biscuity cereal grains and a subtle spiciness. Flavor is light but crispy with a mellow cereal malt tone, dry biscuitiness, and a funky lingering grassy peppery tone.

From fermentation lounge under an alias - don’t remember what name. Grain and funk aroma. Tastes cereal sweet and lemon bitter. Skunk vibe. Not great - certainly by green flash standards. 5.8

Apparently not retired. It’s a good noble hoppy (and very hopppy) and smooth drinking amero-pils.

On tap at brewery. Pours a light yellow with a small white head with some lacing and nice looking carbonation. Aroma is of pils malt, bready malts, grass, and some light spicy saaz hop. Taste is similar to aroma but also has some light fruits and pine. Has a medium body with a creamy mouthfeel an a dry, slightly bitter, moderate-short finish. Overall, a nice pils that is a nice change of pace from green flash’s typical offerings.
