Bottle from St Albans beer shop. Pours deep red, off-white head. Aroma of citrus, pine, resin and sweet malt. Good mouthfeel. Citrus/orange/grapefruit, then sweet malt, then rasping bitterness. Long finish. Delicious.

From a 33cl bottle. Pours a dark red burgundy color with a tan head that went down fast to leave a ring around. Aroma is of hops, malts, bread, biscuit. Flavors are cake like, biscuits, malts, hops, dry red fruits, grains, herbs. Nice medium body, medium to light bitterness. Reminds me of some winter ales. Well balanced, and nice flavors. very pleasant.

This poured a red color with a white head. Aroma was of stale hops and.caramel.Flavor pretty much the same and overly bitter.

Looking over my review of the "old" recipe, just like the West Coast IPA, this newer version just isn’t nearly as good. It seems like body and flavor were sacrificed in order to increase the alcohol percentage. The beer poured an amber color with a very thick and pillow-like tan head. The head left some really beautiful lacing around the inside of the glass. But unfortunately, this is where the good qualities of this beer fade. The nose has way too much sweet malt, with caramel, alcohol, bread, yeast and rye notes. The flavors are too bitter. Usually bitter is a good thing in strong ales, IPAs, IIPAs, etc, but not in this case. It’s more of a metallic, skunky, stale and off-putting flavor. The same effect is felt in the finish and aftertaste, as well. The body has a semi-silky, smooth and creamy texture to it. It’s a huge bummer that the unbalanced and lackluster flavors ruin the overall experience.

A really smooth and hoppy ale. Pours more of a dark brown than a red. Easy drinking for the high abv.

Bottle. Shakespeare’s, Sheffield. Just about clear, reddy amber. Thin, messy, off white head. Stewed apple sweet, thick grapefruit, syrupy hop. Thick, toffee malts. Very heady. Taste is sweet, initially, then a pithy, oily bitterness rises, and lingers. Full body. Juicy, and oily. Finishes long, resinous, piny bitter. Very tasty. Sweet, hoppy, and juicy. Bit fusty, too. Love beers like this.

355ml bottle. Red pour. Smell is caramel, grapefruit, and other various fruits. Seems lacking compared to the old version. Flavor is caramel, nougat, some finishing bitterness, weird off flavor. This is a downgrade form what I remember though I think the WC re-up was a good success.

Personally I like the old west coast and hop head red, then again 7% is my fav abv for a ipa. This is a deep red creamy head good lace. Aroma is hoppy but aged as the best by date happens to be not printed on the label. Resin , toasted malts caramels, some breadyness. Taste is like aroma with slick smooth caramel malts. I remember liking the hop head pre 2014 more. Bumping everything up didn’t really do it for me but its still pretty good. I like them a little less than before now though. I think they should have kept the old and amped up to 9-10% for a double though even though Im not big on big double ipas.

Deep red pour. Big tan head. Plenty of lacing. Big malt and danky hop aroma. Taste is spot on to the nose. Tasty.
