Editor’s note: If you had the 8.1% abv version marketed since 2014 as a Double Red India Pale Ale, this is the wrong beer page. Please rate under Green Flash Hop Head Red Double IPA (2014 -). Resinous hop characteristics emerge from an enormous hopping with Columbus, Nugget and Amarillo overtaking the rich caramel malt base. To add luscious
hop flavors and enticingly floral hop aromas, we dry-hop the brew with bucket loads of Amarillo hops. Welcome to the world of Red IPA.

12 oz. bottle. Pours murky copper color with a lot of floaters and a thick, lasting orangey tan head that leaves ample lacing. Aroma is mostly piney hops but a nice base of chewy malts is also apparent. Likewise, the flavor features some complex, malty esters topped with fresh aromatic hops. Balances rather dry. Medium full bodied with moderate carbonation. This is definitely more than a standard amber/red ale and also doesn’t fit the IPA/DIPA style. I might call it an American strong ale, along the lines of Arrogant Bastard (but slightly toned down).

Bottle... Thinkin’ ‘Bout Thirteen Hours O’ Drinkin’ (tew man wrecking crew)... Mostly clear copper ale with a mid-sized, fluffy, khaki head. Excellent retention. Peppery aroma with notes of black tea and lemon. Full-bodied with a 2%-milk mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. Medium caramel sweetness obliterated by heavy-assed, balls-out bitterness. Wow... those hops really pack a punch! Lengthy, tongue-numbing, heavily bitter finish.

Good looking beer. Smells like a nice blend of malt and hops. Quite prominent hops in the flavor overpowers the malt just a bit. Quite hoppy aftertaste, it is quite resinous, but that’s not really my thing.

Poured an amber light brown color in the glass. Aroma was lightly citrus but had a lot of malt to back up the hops. Flavor was pretty hoppy with a solid bitterness. A real solid beer. I wish this wasnt so expensive in ohio.

Courtesy hopscotch. Pours a gorgeous, lightly hazy copper maroon color, with a small, foamy light brown head. Smells of balanced hops, some grapefruit citrus, and grain. The flavor was definitely on th hoppy side, with a profound hop bitterness in the finish. A small malt presence is noticeable to add a bit of balance to the flavor characters, but the hop citrus was definitely dominant. A bit spicy and peppery in the aftertaste. I quite enjoyed this brew.

Hazy deep copper coloured body with strong ruby highlights and a nice dense tan head. Aroma of fresh high a.a. hops with grapefruit and floral characteristics, tucked into some malt and yeast. Medium-bodied; Strong hoppy backbone with some malt highlights and a strong nutty flavour. Aftertaste shows hop highlights and some sweetness from caramel, along with a bit of malt. Overall, a good beer - more of an IPA than an Amber, but that’s the way I prefer it! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Kybecca in Fredericksburg, Virginia on 31-May-2008, sampled on 15-June-2008.

UPDATED: OCT 22, 2012 12oz bottle from Sam’s, Durham. Another strong entry from Green Flash. The strong citrus aroma certainly recalls the WCIPA pretty strongly, but the amber body and the more robust malts distinguish it - but not by much. It’s less full bodied than I’d like, and is in some ways a bit anonymous. But at bottom this is a fine thirst-quenching beer with enough taste and complexity to scratch that itch too.

This poured hazy amber in color with a think head that dissipated but remained. Aromas are of citrus hops, rye and some sweet malt. In the mouth it is tart with some nice richness in the midpalate before finishing with bitter citrusy hops.

Bottle. Aroma of rich caramel malt, bitter hops. Flavor quite bitterly hoppy, taking over from the malt, but still worked well together and left some slight fruity notes in the background. Not a whole lot of unique flavor notes, but nice, dry, and thirst-quenching.

12 oz bottle. Pours dark cloudy amber/brown with floaters (not sure if its suppose to have that...) with 2 cm foamy off white head. Aroma of rye and some hops. Initial flavors fruit and rye. Flavor ends more hoppy. Aftertaste is bitter and metalic. Lots of lacing, some carbonation, light body, and couldn’t appreciate the alcohol presence. Overall kinda disappointing, but still a solid rye, too much build up.
