Pours a lasting almond-coloured head atop a deep amber body. Nose is wonderful - I love Amarillo hops. The sweetness and spruce background on this beer has made this my all-round favourite available non-BC beer this year. Remarkable stuff. 9/4/8/4/16 Changed (163), Ithaca, New York, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Mar 20, 2009 12oz bottle. Pours deep red with nice off white head- and tons of floating yeast. Aroma is a nice hop-blast, but the last is a bit underwhelming- not a ton of complexity in this one. Not very hoppy for something marketed as a "red IPA." Still, a drinkable beer- just not at +$2 a bottle. Rastacouere (5552), Montréal, Quebec, Canada
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 2/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Mar 18, 2009 12oz bought at Julio’s. Powerfully aromatic ale with its explosive dry-hop aroma, loaded with resin and tangerine. I can’t say it’s particularly attractive with its numerous beige sediments floating around the dull light brown body. Its head is initially uite large though, but again fades away within minutes. Still, the nose catches back the poor first impression with its apt inclusion of caramelly more than toasty malt. Plenty of hop aromas in mouth also while the bitterness remains limited, the latter being especially due to the malt’s heavy consistence for the style, in the Californian mold. Lasting spruce resin finish does not completely annihilates the cerealic base. Successful in its genre. While relatively straightforward, a full-flavoured and most drinkable ale. brokephibroke (140), Mead, Colorado, USA

Malt dominates, where’s the hops? Call it Malt Head Red Light and I would be more impressed. Bragesnak (2257), Aarhus, Denmark

Amber-red with small head. Aroma of malt, hay and spruce. Flavor is caramel with a solid hoppiness of spices, ctrus and bitterness BroSpud (597), , Massachusetts, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 11/20 | Mar 14, 2009 12oz bottle. Excellent beer, definitely more on the IPA side of things. Great hop presence with a very dark reddish brown color. Godd lingering after taste. CheersMate1 (789), Atlanta, Georgia, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Mar 13, 2009 Caramel brown in color, with a head that fades away quickly. For an amber ale this appearance is very nice. Huge malt aroma. The fact that this has only 45 IBUs I wasn’t expecting a very bitter beer, but with a name like "Hop Head" what was I expecting? Huge malty aroma that leans towards a barley wine-type aroma. This was not the aroma that I was expecting. Slight bittering hop that adds a weird flavor to the beer. It seems like this beer should be, or was meant to be a barley wine. The bittering hop is great, but it doesn’t compliment the malt aroma, or flavor. Very sweet malt flavor at first but then that hop hits you very hard. Decent beer, but not one of my favorites. Maria (6167), Thisted, Denmark
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Mar 12, 2009 It is hazy, nice red-brown and the head is huge and creamy. The aroma has notes of fruit, caramel and citrus. The flavour has a light sweetness, notes of malt, caramel, candy sugar, fruit, mango, citrus and a dry bitterness in the finish, that is a little out of balance IMO.
