I am surprised that this is an amber and not an IPA., because the hops are front and center in this brew. Fresh, grassy hops, with grapefruit and pine flavors, mostly dry and with a touch of sweat. Candied grapefruit aroma of sweetness and citric hops mixing together. The flavor is pretty much their IPA with less bitterness and more sweetness. If you are in the mood for a maltier and less hoppy ale, this will do. At the same time, it really isn’t that interesting in comparison. A nice, hoppy amber, but the malts aren’t giving enough to trump that hop flavor, which is still less than I would want for an IPA. I guess I just don’t get it. (746314, 3.4)............. Rerate: Bottled again. Head lasts for days. Super floral and grapefruit aroma is nice, but there is some malty sweetness poking through too. tasted it warmer this time around, and the bitterness gave way to a nicer malt flavor. Hops are still super green and grapefruity. This really is quite bitter. Palate seems smoother and just right in the middle thickness wise. As long as you know that you are getting into a darker IPA, I think Green Flash has got you covered here. vadavid (131), Fredericksburg, Virginia, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 17, 2008 Pours a red-brown color with a thick head that leaves lots of sticky lacing as it fades. It certainly looks like a typical red ale, but that is where the similarity ends. The brewer dry hops with Amarillo hops giving the beer a strong citrus aroma and flavor. A bit of pine hits those senses as well. The hop profile is significant but the beer is still balanced with enough malt sweetness to keep things in check. There is some lingering bitterness, and a slightly oily mouthfeel. At 6% ABV it’s a little high for a session beer, but still quite drinkable. I was somewhat reminded of Tröegs Nugget Nectar, another highly hopped American Red Ale. However, Nugget Nectar has a stronger malt backbone, whereas the Green Flash has a much stronger citrus profile. That stereotypical East Coast - West Coast difference perhaps? mwelsh13 (484), Maryland, USA
