This American-style Black IPA is nearly jet black and perceived to have high hop bitterness, flavor and aroma with medium-high alcohol content, balanced with a medium body. The appearance may trick you into thinking you are about to enjoy a traditional stout beer when in fact your senses are about to be overwhelmed with our Black IPA. Juicy, fruity, floral, and pine from Pacific Northwest hops gives the beer a classic West Coast IPA hop character. The Black IPA is further characterized by a balanced and moderate degree of caramel malt and subdued dark roasted malt flavor and aroma. 7.2% ABV, 85 Hops used: Warrior, Citra, Cascade

Bottle from beer junction. Off the bat lots of chocolate and toffee that overwhelms the hops. The hops are a nice side note. Alcohol is pretty well hidden.

I smell beef, caramel, rye, salt (working on a reuben.) beige, lacing head on opaque darkest brown. Chocolate flavor with grapefruit rind bitter, toffee, wood smoke, has a good mouth weight. Bitter finish. Not a big CDA fan but this works due to the lighter amount of roasted malt and a careful choice of hops, though a little shrieking on their own for my taste.

Pours a clean deep black color with a dense, creamy, tan head. Aroma has a strong pine nose with a modest toasted and roasted malt nose late. Flavor starts off with a strong pine hops kick but transitions to a much lighter orange citrus and roasted barley flavor. Body is perfect with enough body to hold the flavor and modest/high amount of carbonation to deliver the aromas of this beer. Overall a really solid beer. The nose and flavor are very clean and distinct in their character.

Bottle @ home, picked up @ Argonaut in Denver last week. Pours a black appearance with a soft, creamy, brown head. Really piney and resiny hoppy nose. Definitely some tropical fruit and grapefruit mixed in there as well with the roast and burnt malts. Kind of creamy mouth feel. Flavor is full of pineapple, grapefruit, and juicy tropical fruits which is a bit odd when in combination with the burnt, roasty, chocolate malts. Moderate sweetness. Moderate to high bitterness. Twangy finish. Pretty fucken strange brew though not completely unenjoyable.

Bottle. Pours a near black color with a moderate light tan head on it. Nose is roasty, though subtle, with a stronger hop element that comes through rather floral. Taste is definitely quite bitter, though has a really nice underlying roasting element to it. Strikes a nice balance between roasting and IPA. I like it.

Sampled from 650mL bottle. Poured into goblet. Two finger head, dark red / ebony color, moderately carbonated. Aroma of resin, pine, citrus, slightly floral. Great mouthfeel, moderate palate, complexity lingers after each sip. Very much a ’green flash’ beer. Reminds me of a slightly malty imperial IPA.

The aroma is of caramel malt mixed with pine and floral scents. Color is a dark, almost black. It has a light brown head that clings well to the side. The taste is caramel, maybe a bit of chocolate with piney hops and floral overtones.

Opaque, lacy. Medium full body, flavorful. Bittersweet, both in moderation. Roast flavors, dried cherries. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
