COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This American-style Black IPA is nearly jet black and perceived to have high hop bitterness, flavor and aroma with medium-high alcohol content, balanced with a medium body. The appearance may trick you into thinking you are about to enjoy a traditional stout beer when in fact your senses are about to be overwhelmed with our Black IPA. Juicy, fruity, floral, and pine from Pacific Northwest hops gives the beer a classic West Coast IPA hop character. The Black IPA is further characterized by a balanced and moderate degree of caramel malt and subdued dark roasted malt flavor and aroma. 7.2% ABV, 85 Hops used: Warrior, Citra, Cascade

Draft at Beer Run. Pours a clear dark red-brown color with a medium sized creamy tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of citrus hops, chocolate, caramel, roasted malts. The taste is bitter citrus and minty hops and roasted malts. Medium bodied.

Bottle @ home, picked up @ Argonaut in Denver last week. Pours a black appearance with a soft, creamy, brown head. Really piney and resiny hoppy nose. Definitely some tropical fruit and grapefruit mixed in there as well with the roast and burnt malts. Kind of creamy mouth feel. Flavor is full of pineapple, grapefruit, and juicy tropical fruits which is a bit odd when in combination with the burnt, roasty, chocolate malts. Moderate sweetness. Moderate to high bitterness. Twangy finish. Pretty fucken strange brew though not completely unenjoyable.

On tap at Mr. Goodbar. Black with a little head and lace. Lots of hop aroma. Very little roast, it’s in the background. Cascadian and citra and warrior hops make it interesting and good drinkability. Above average mouthfeel.

On tap at Belmont Station’s Bier Cafe, pours a deep dark amber with a small beige head. Aroma of roasted malt, citrus hops and some fruitiness. Flavour brings out loads of woody resinous hops, rye and bitter roasted malt. Leaves quite a harsh astringency on the finish. Dry, rye-y and bitter. Good stuff, but a bit harsh.

Bottle at Bruce’s. It pours darkest brown with a medium light tan head. The nose is fresh, piney, citrus peel, soap, potpourri, toast and roasted malt. The taste is bitter, roasted malt, varnish, piney, resin, raw bitterness, citrus peel, light alcohol, grapefruit and dirt with lingering bitter finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Plenty of raw bitterness. Not the most refined, but decent enough anyhow.

Pour out of 22 oz bottle, dark black pour with lacing tan head, aroma brought dark cocoa, roast, nice pine, grass, hints of orange into a bit of coffee, some dark fruit. Taste is a mix of pine, grass, orange into some nice cocoa, roast, coffee, slight herbal, minty notes, finishing bitter, dry.

Burnt pineapple, chocolate / roast malt, pine sap, spruce needles, sawdust shavings, chocolate grapefruit bubblegum. Medium-full body, semi-sweet, strongly hoppy, not oppressively bitter. Soft body, a little smoke-y, a little savory. One of the better examples of a hoppy stout. At the same time it smells like a dull bandsaw burning pine in 7th grade shop class. From bottle.

Pint on tap at Lackman for $7. Black body. Thin khaki head. Good, thicker lace. Bigger body. Light to medium strength smooth lightly soft carbonation. More dry finish. Big herbal kind of spicy hop flavor. Savory herbs like basil, maybe some thyme, some tobacco. Light roast. Moderate bitter taste, then a light sweet in the finish. Unusual black IPA... Not really any chocolate, much more herbal and spicy than most. But it’s tasty and interesting
