COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This American-style Black IPA is nearly jet black and perceived to have high hop bitterness, flavor and aroma with medium-high alcohol content, balanced with a medium body. The appearance may trick you into thinking you are about to enjoy a traditional stout beer when in fact your senses are about to be overwhelmed with our Black IPA. Juicy, fruity, floral, and pine from Pacific Northwest hops gives the beer a classic West Coast IPA hop character. The Black IPA is further characterized by a balanced and moderate degree of caramel malt and subdued dark roasted malt flavor and aroma. 7.2% ABV, 85 Hops used: Warrior, Citra, Cascade

In short: A nutty and very hoppy big brown ale. Very good.
How: Tap at Reservoir, Waterbury VT.
The look: Clear very dark brown (near black) body topped by a small beige head.
In long: Nose is moderately hoppy (citrusy) over a toasted nuttiness. Taste is more intense than the nose hinted on. A nutty fudge cake, a rather corpulent body, lots of almonds, nice caramel, tree bark, an enormous citrusy hops presence, a bitterness of medium-high intensity. More like one of those so-called Double-Brown IPA than a typical Black IPA, and I like well-made hoppy nutty brown ale. Abundant carbonation. Easy to drink even if a rather powerful tasty beer. I see high and low ratings for this beer, that proves there are really two types of people in this world, people who are wasting time on ratebeer entering ratings that nobody care about, and people who don’t use ratebeer.

Awesome beer. Glass at Belmont. Pours an almost totally black color with a medium beige head. A big dank fruity hop nose with some roast. The flavor is wonderful: big sweet chocolate and ash, but dominant fruity hops, very dark, low bitterness, big sweet citrus. Funky weed. Very drinkable. Love me some CDA.

On tap. Black with a fizzy off white head. Big grassy hops aroma with some roasted grain notes. Vegetal lawn clippings, grassy, slightly skunky hops presence to the taste with the roasted malts kind of lost in the background. A bit too unbalanced for my tastes.

Tallahassee, Fl. – New Leaf Market – 22 oz. bomber. Deep dark as coal pour with a thick sticky mocha colored head. Aroma has some eggy accents, a brief touch of spruce. Flavor is full bodied and delicious. Nice bittersweet citrusy accents, a touch of licorice, some minty rye accents, some nuttiness. Thick, rich mouthfeel. Another solid entrant from Green Flash.

Bottle. Black pour with a short tan head. Aroma is strong resinous hops, floral hops, citrus and pine atop roasted malt notes and hints of coffee. Taste is roasted malt, pine, citrus, floral hops, caramel notes and hops resins. Body is medium-full and slightly chewy with resinous hop notes and a creamy carbonation. Ends with more roasted malt, pine resins, floral hops, citrus fruit, hop oils and dark chocolate notes.
