The 2008 Surf’s Up Symposium IPA was brewed San Diego Style: highly quaffable, pale in color with a lighter body and profound emphasis on hop extravaganza.

2013 reincarnation of Green Flash Surfs Up IPA served on tap at the Secret Stash Bash. Poured clear, light amber in color, and with a medium and fairly durable head. Had an attractive and complex hoppy aroma. Medium/high bitterness (IBU = 75) in this hoppy, West Coast style IPA that has limited amount of sweet malts. The hop mix included piney, herbal, citrus and grassy/weedy elements. Medium body with slightly high carbonation. O: a rather aggressive hop-lovers IPA.

I wasn’t able to determine much aroma from this, a small citrussy note and some grassyness.

On tap at the brewery, served in a tasting glass. Pours clear straw-amber with small white head that fades quickly and leaves a tiny amount of lace. On the nose, there are medium floral, fruity, piney hops with subtle caramel malts. The finish is moderate in length with floral hops and subtle spice. On the palate it is medium in body with a smooth milky texture and soft carbonation. Overall, this is a decent floral IPA but it feels like it is missing something. 2013-03-17

Draft. Amber beer with a cream head. Grapefruit and pine aroma. Pine and earthy flavor. Medium bodied. Good bitterness. Earth and pine linger with light woodsiness.

Pours a bright orange with a small off white head and some lacing. Aroma is of citrus peels, pine, some tropical fruits, and some sweet biscuit malts. Taste is of citrus (mainly lemon and grapefruit) pine resin, tropical fruits (mainly pineapple) some biscuit malts, and some sweet malts. Has a medium body with a semi creamy mouthfeel and a semi dry, crisp, refreshing finish. Overall, a very nice IPA that is very refreshing and drinkable.

Got this on draft at THE LOCAL BEER BAS in Eureka, CA on Green Flash night. Came in the glass a clear orange color with a white head and good lacing. Nose is a burst of hops with citrus leading the way. Medium in body with a smooth mouthfeel. Flavor is big here with tropical fruits going well with the grapefruit and oranges. Finish is dry and bitter. Really good beer.

On tap at Obriens during Green Flash Night 2013, all anniversary ales rebrewed on tap. This is delicious and easy drinking. Floral aroma with light citrus zest. Straightforward peppery hops flavor with a light malt base. Well balanced throughout with a fairly quick flavor fade. Sessionable!

December 2012. On tap at Kickback’s. Rich orange pour with a nice head and lacing. The aroma and flavor are bursting with loads of citrus, especially tangerine, with kicks of orange and plenty of grapefruit as well. The flavor boasts a nice backing of pale malts, but this one definitely leans towards fresh, hoppy, bitter, and citrus. Delish!

On tap. Colour...orange-amber with no head. Nose...stone fruits and husky/musky hops with Fruit Gems, to boot. Palate...decent CO2, dry-bitter hops with a tend towards grapefruit as opposed to pine. There’s a dry soil aspect on the front if the palate and plenty of malt to balance things out. This isn’t a viscous ipa but it tastes like it should be. Nice stuff!
