The 2008 Surf’s Up Symposium IPA was brewed San Diego Style: highly quaffable, pale in color with a lighter body and profound emphasis on hop extravaganza.

Draft at Dutch’s. Pours a clear golden color with a small off white head. The aroma has nice grapefruit, zest, resin, and grassy hops light caramel and toasted malts. The flavor loses much of the character from the nose and shows a very general bitterness, grass, toasted bready malts and earth. Nose is much better than the flavor.

On cask @ redlight redlight. Strong hop aromas, pine, fresh cut grass and grapefruit zest. Pours orange gold with a white head. Strong bitterness up front with bitter citrus peel with some malty sweetness peaking through but finishes with a very floral hoppy flavor. Very nice hoppy flavor.

Draft to taster at Dutch’s. Looks good; a transparent golden orange with foamy white head that dissipates into sticky lacing. Smells and tastes solid; nice and hoppy with a well-balanced light-bodied pale malt backbone. Good on the palate. Good beer.

On tap at Lunar Brewing Co., and dispensed to a shaker displaying a clear & bright, deep golden color, with a decent layer of off white/light tan head foam that gradually reduced to a ring & film, but left some clingy, patchy, web-like lacing. The nose was perfumey citrus as grapefruit, some pine, a touch of sweetness, and some tropical scent as pineapple. The flavor then presented an earthy, tanniny, hop bitterness that was hefty, very lingering, but not biting at all, and under control by the solid malt content. Good carbonation and a more than medium body, as the bitterness seemed to contribute an added sense of fullness to the palate. An IPA+.

On tap at Monk?s Kettle, SF. Pours a golden orange with plenty of? head. Thin aroma. My cheeks filled with hop flavor... which promptly dissolved on my tongue. Faint malts, very faint. Mega-dry. Pretty interesting. Hot weather IPA.

9oz on tap at Yard House Cincinnati, for $3.50 during happy hour. Clear golden-orange color. Good thin off-white head. Nice grassy, piney, resiny hop aroma. Wet, dank, some grapefruit citrus. Nice thicker rows of lace. Good smooth, crisp lighter carbonation. Medium-plus body. Lightly sticky in the finish. Nice moderate - stronger bitter taste, light sweet. Good biscuity malt, very light caramel. Tasty IPA.

Pours a lightly hazy golden amber with a medium white head. Aroma of citrus, pine and floral hops. Touch of bready malt. Flavor of grapefruit, orange, bready malt. Dry yet it has a slightly creamy mouthfeel. Oats in the grain bill maybe?
