"San Diego-style IPA, as it has come to be known by many, is a super-hoppy, high gravity, yet highly quaffable ale. Green Flash Imperial IPA is created in this new tradition, with intense hop flavors and aromas from a unique blend of Summit and Nugget hops. Itís all about the hops!" -- Brewmaster Chuck Silva

UPDATED: NOV 6, 2007 22oz Bottle from the bay area; thank you Karen T!

Pours a fairly light gold with an offwhite head, presenting an aroma that is really heavy on the citrus and pith and not much else in there. The flavor, while one dimensional, is very nice - not too sweet, a mouth-puckering bitter citrus with almost a hint of sour, mild sweet malts flirting around the hops but none of the overdone burnt caramel that so often mars the style, leaving a deliciously drinkable beer that goes down a lot easier than its 9% might make one think. Slight flavor of alcohol, relatively smooth mouthfeel, serious hop showcase, all-around about as nice as IIPA gets.

A curious note: both nights after drinking this one, I had a strange caffeine-like buzz that kept me from sleeping in the middle of the night. Something in the hops? Or just coincidence?

I like when they put the IBUs on the bottle, but try not to look until after tasting. This deep amber beer with its big frothy white head had some kick-ass hops going for it in the aroma and taste. The intense hoppiness gave a burn in the mouth that was very rewarding. What malt sweetness present was inconsequential. This was a hophead beer. Am I becoming one? Shit! Look what that did for Cornfield! Seriously, this was right up his alley and was much enjoyed even by this stoutie. Excellent beer.

Duane shared a bottle of this with me. Thanks! Hazy orange pour, lots of citrus hop aroma. Flavor fell a little short of the aroma, but was still very good. Not as much malt in this as other IIPAs though. Good but not great IIPA.

220z bottle via Homebrew Mys Swap (thanks Rudolf!) Pours a hazy amber with an average size head. Nose is mostly citrus and pine. Taste starts quite sweet and ends bittersweet and in between there is orange, pineapple, mango, and graoefruit, with some subtle pine in the finish. It is a nice hop profile, and the malts are definitely heavy. This could almost be called a BarleyWine... There are some phenols present in the finish, as the alcohol is not hidden at all. Body is full, carbonation medium.

Extremely hoppy aroma. The taste is mild in comparison, but still nice hops. The palate is surprisingly smooth. Goes great with ribeye steak!

22oz bomber, pours a hazy light orange with aroma of hops, a bit of pines, slight caramel. Flavor is smooth, flowers, hops. Surprisingly no hop bite or bitterness. Not a bad IIPA.

As a total hop-head, I dug this beer, but felt a little ripped off. In my opinion theyíve taken their West Coast I.P.A. and simply ran a different carbonation scheme not unlike Alesmithís I.P.A. which employs thr micro-bubbles carbonation style if you pick up what I;m layiní down. Great beer, but....

Bomber. A somewhat cloudy orange color with a big foamy white head. Smells of orange peel and grapefruit. The flavor is an interesting mix between a hoppy IPA and the spice of a Saison. Not the hop-forward IPA I was expecting, but itís flavor is all itís own and really drinkable. Quite floral and citrusy. Itís not a must have, but Iíll be trying this one again if they start coming to NC.

Outstanding. Floral. Hoppy. Full body. Not overpowering. The style I love. A really good IPA from a brewery that I am now really in love with. Ship to Missouri!

Hazy, thick, syrupy looking body. Glowing orange-amber color. Large, fluffy off-white head settles quickly to a thin patchy film with a skinny edge. Minimal spotty lacing dots the glass. The nose has a strange buttered graham cracker profile up front, almost like a pie crust. Scents of strong orange and grapefruit hops add sharpness, while cereal grains add a grainy component to the background. The flavor is again heavily based on buttery malts, with caramel and toffee playing big roles. Sour grapefruit hops rush in on the back end. Moderately astringent finish. Medium-heavy, syrupy body. Sits pretty heavy. This is a somewhat strange brew that let me down a bit.
