Le Freak is a modern ale created by converging two beer styles, Belgian Trippel and American Imperial IPA. The use of two yeast strains further marries the styles and American hops give the beer its modern flare.

22 oz bottle. Pours a hazy golden orange honey with a medium sized white head. Aroma of coriander, herbal tea, bubble gum and candied sugar. Taste of bubblegum, coriander, candied sugar, tea and spice.

Clear gold with almost no head. Effervescent hop aroma with bubble gum and corriander. Taste contains some of the above , with an unexpected, stinging tannic bitterness. Finish is estery, with rubbing alcohol aftertaste, and lingering bitterness. $10/22oz

On tap at Smoken Joes in the southside. Slightly cloudy but for the most part this is a pale lager looking beer. Lots of sparkling carbonation is clinging to the inside of the glass. Yep, smells like a trippel, candylike volatile aroma. Very thin white head. Quite strong on the initial onslaught but possibly not as strong tasting as many of the other american versions of belgie strongs I’ve had. Certainly does not taste like a 9%’er. IMHO could have a little less alky impact but then it would not be a strong ale, would it? Overall, could be a little more refined like most of it’s civilized bretherin. I would say this is more like a trippel than a strong ale. Nice transparent lacing. Did not taste hardly any hop in this brew, in spite of it’s name. Just had a hommel strong ale, much more enjoyable than this.

Style and Glass: Begian strong; trappist, tulip, wine ABV, Volume & Calories: 9.2 % in 22 fl oz. estimated at 400 C Purchased at: Super Saver, Pennington, NJ for $8.99 Aroma: very nice, spicy, aromatic, smooth, fruity, delicious. 9 out of 10. Visuals: nice packaging, copper, golden, hazy, unfiltered, thin white head, loose lace. 4 out of 5. Taste: almost balanced, medium malt, heavy hops, surprising, great strength, high craft. 9 out of 10. Palate: high quality, rippled texture, long bright finish. 5 out of 5. Overall: Done in the tradition of Houblon Chouffe Dobbelen IPA Tripel, where the hops and bananas all get in bed together. Definitely a repeat, though maybe not a favorite, okay value, high craft. 18 out of 20.

22 ounce bottle purchased at the Davis Food Co-Op. Hempy, piney, citrus hops are present in the nose. Plenty of Belgian yeast banana esters are in there as well. A bit musty. Aroma is intriguing. Mostly transparent golden body with a medium off-white head that is pretty strong. Starts with an orange-flavored hoppiness, which is pretty tasty. It becomes a little sweet and chewy before the Belgian yeast kicks in to give it some banana flavors. A little ethanolic after that, with some piney, grapefruit hop flavors rounding this up. An interesting brew, but I’d rather have their regular IIPA.

bottle from fiver29: pours a hazy golden colour with a big white head. aroma is very nice full of belgina yeast and lots of american hops, sweet malts seem to bring the two together to make a very nice aroma.very enjoyable. flavour is very belgina upfront with lots of the sweet amlts and good yeast character. the finish is all american ipa with lots of bitter hops some earthy grass and touvhes of grapefruit. a interesting idea that seems to fit. a little over the top on the hops but enjoyable.
