Le Freak is a modern ale created by converging two beer styles, Belgian Trippel and American Imperial IPA. The use of two yeast strains further marries the styles and American hops give the beer its modern flare.

A dark yellow, slightly reddish beer, a head is medium and blond. Aroma is interesting, strong sweet fruits and some tropical notes, overally the fruitness is turning to almost fruit candies, mandarin, spices. Taste has fruits, mandarin, grapefruits, spices, some caramel malts and quite strong hoppyness dries the end. Almost full bodied, refreshning carbonation. Intresting beer, the complex fruits are results from hops and yeast, then mixed with spices and bitterness. Very good beer.

On tap at Howells & Hood, had a unique smell as I recall, comes off bitter and strong, but once the palate adjusts there is some IPA goodness, a nice eye opener. Strong is what something called The Freak should be and it is.

This beer pours a hazy golden yellow color with a thick soapy white head that had great retention and left a good amount of lacing around the glass. The aroma is floral, citrus, some Belgian yeast, and grapefruit. The taste is rather unique because it really does taste like a mixture between an ipa and a Belgian. I pick up pine, hop resin, some citrus, some breadiness, and quite a bit of bitterness. The alcohol is hidden quite well. The mouthfeel is on the medium side and the drinkability is quite high.

Pour from bomber into snifter, hazy deep orange, solid head retention. Aroma is sharp lemony pine and taming melon/pineapple notes. Taste is rich and foresty with high notes of tangerine and melon. Soapiness is off-putting. No "best by" date, possibly an older batch. Have seen it in the local beer shop for quite some time and decided to pick one up on a whim. A very reliable, enjoyable brewery, hope to aquire a fresher one soon. Soapiness borderline headache-inducing on this one. Still nice.

Bottle from BarleyWine, CPH - golden pour with white head. Fruity and yeasty aroma and taste, grassy and floral hoppy nuances throughout, some light fruity spice towards a dry finish. Decent brew.

750ml bottle. No bottle date on label. Appearance: Golden, slight haze, and moderate off white foam head. Aroma: Belgian yeast aroma dominates, with strong banana, pear, and clove. Also pick up a light grassy, citrus hop aroma. Aroma leans more heavily toward a tripel than IIPA. Taste: Starts with a soft malt sweetness and fruity clove character of a tripel, then transforms into a really strong hop bitterness that immediately stops the fruitiness. Tastes like two completely seperate beers that came together in one. Mouthfeel: medium body with moderate to high carbonation. Finish: Dry with a strong lingering bitterness. Fruity yeast retronasal aroma. Overall: A robust, strong, bitter ale that is surprisingly easy drinking. Beautiful aroma lends it to the combo of the desired styles. If I could recommend one change it would be to back down the bitterness a few notches to let the yeast shine more in the taste and finish. Once that bitterness kicks in it overrides all the other flavors that make this a great hybrid.
