As craft beer pioneers, we embarked on an expedition to brew the benchmark West Coast IPA. We ventured into the unknown and struck gold, discovering a tantalizing menagerie of hops. Simcoe for tropical and grapefruit zest, Columbus for hop pungency, Centennial for pine notes, Citra for citrus zest, and Cascade for floral aroma are layered throughout the brewing process. West Coast IPA exemplifies the Green Flash spirit of adventure and discovery.

On tap, poured into a snifter. The aroma is a blend of pine, resin, and grapefruit with other assorted tropical notes. It’s a murky yellow amber hue with a dense head, mild retention, and lots of snowdrift lacing. The taste profile is a medium high bitter and medium sweet compliment. The texture is oily with a fuzzy carbonation and a medium full body with notes of pine, wood resin, and grapefruit along with a lightly floral and burnt bread undertone. The finish is crisp with notes of caramel, bread, and grapefruit membrane. The strong, pungent aftertaste is bitter grapefruit and pine that coats the mouth and lingers for awhile, but ends abruptly and clean.

Draft to taster. Looks good; a fairly transparent fuller gold with off-white head that steadily dissipates into lacing. Smells piney and juicy with a malty bittersweet backbone. Tastes like it smells with a slightly boozy medium full-bodied mouthfeel. Solid, but malty, and not what I’d call a West Coast DIPA.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a dark golden orange with a good off white frothy head that settles to a soapy film and lacing. Aroma is herbal hops caramel malt candied sugar and some spice. Taste is bitter herbal hops faint citrus pine and plenty of caramel malt and spice in the finish. Full sticky.

Draft, Poured from a 32 oz growler. Dark copper, with a dense, lasting, tan head, and sticky lace. Aroma is floral, mango, citrus, a touch of caramel. Favor is pine up front, with some grapefruit, and sweet caramel malt balancing it out. There is a little alcohol heat on the finish, but overall it is a nice DIPA.

I have the older version of this a 4.4. Not sure if this is a different recipe or just marketing. Similar to those notes, the malt is bank seat. Nicely, the hops are over the top and not just the bitterness. Going to take objection to their overly starting their awesomeness on the bottle, but still a mighty tasty

Pours clear golden with small head. Sweet and fruity aroma. Nice balanced, not as sweet, finishes sour. Nice.

Light Hoppy smell ...citrus, taste is too hoppy and bitter citrus, killer after pausing for a while...too much for me

Big & bitter. Not really my style of ipa. Huge hops & good aroma but not bad overall.
