COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
(This is the new recipe for West Coast IPA, now an Imperial IPA)

If you are drinking this one in Europe, chances are you should be rating under this entry: http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/green-flash--st-feuillien-west-coast-ipa/281827/

As craft beer pioneers, we embarked on an expedition to brew the benchmark West Coast IPA. We ventured into the unknown and struck gold, discovering a tantalizing menagerie of hops. Simcoe for tropical and grapefruit zest, Columbus for hop pungency, Centennial for pine notes, Citra for citrus zest, and Cascade for floral aroma are layered throughout the brewing process. West Coast IPA exemplifies the Green Flash spirit of adventure and discovery.

Draft: Whole orange, lilly nose. Clear amber, medium yellow head. Orange, tangerine. Some maltiness, but definitely hop forward. Medium body, alcohol noticeable. Great beer, but too hoppy for me to pair with spicy Mexican food

A steady, soft pour into my fresh, clear, plastic hotel cup produces a Ĺ-finger thick, light tan colored head. The beer is a bright copper color that shows a brilliantly clear, golden copper hue when held up to the light. The aroma smells of sweet candied spruce, candied fresh pine, ripe tangelo zest, bright ruby red grapefruit, nice guava notes, and lychee. This is backed by soft caramelized malt, and a bit of sweet grain character, as well as some menthol leaning hop notes.

Slightly sweet up front, which accentuates the bright hop fruitiness, while the middle and finish takes on a woody spiciness, a definite bitter herbal bite, and a lingering pine character. The body has a creamy heft to it that isnít quite as light and refreshing as I prefer (which is why I usually prefer IPAs to Doubles), but still keeps this well out of the Barley wine territory. Flavors of lychee, guava, ripe tangelo zest, spicy kumquat, bitter orange peel, peppery pine, a bit of sage, and perhaps even some savory / spicy / woody cedar like notes. The male plays a clearly supporting role here, but the finish does have a touch of caramelized, slightly sweet tea leaning crystal malt to it, and there is some toasted whole grain cracker character as well.

This is a nice Double IPA, it does still reinforce my preference for regular IPAs though, as I donít like the extra alcohol and chewy malt character that comes along with these, in general. Still this does hold my interest, and is tastily hoppy, so I canít really complain much. I hope they are replacing the old West Coast with something in the regular IPA range.

Bottle @ De Molen Beer Shop. Pours hazy dark golden with a white head. Mango and tropical hops with very faint caramel. Quite unlike any 2ipa ive had recently. Fresh hops and overall a superb balance. Smooth, vaguely sticky and dry!

Sampled at ABR 2014. Clear rich gold pour with a frothy white head. Citrus and pine, with some floral notes. Another good west coast IPA from Green Flash.

lemme start this off by saying to you fellow raters: if youíre getting a bottle of this - and im talking to you folks that are overseas - and youíre stating thatís itís golden amber in color, or hazy golden, then youíve got a sample thatís probably not fresh. when fresh either via bottle or on tap this is a copper golden color leaning more to the copper. typically im not a huge green flash drinker but this one definitly ticks the boxes; creamy, bracingly bitter with excellent grapefruit, pine and resin. not too sweet but there is a nice bit of malt present though hops are the dominant player here. well done.

Overall a very nice double IPA with itís classic west coast tropical fruit characteristics. I liked the old one better. This one has a bit too much sweetness and alcohol presence for my taste.

On tap @ Yard House Irvine. Golden pour with white foam. Nose is fairly resinous and piney. A lot of caramel and honey, though. Floral hops, some orange, and grapefruit. Eh. Flavor is kind of sweet and malty. Intense piney bitterness. Some grass, orange, and grapefruit peel. A somewhat chalky note, too. Maybe some peach.

Poured from a bottle. Clear golden color, small white head. Medium floral aroma. Medium body with a strong bitter flavor and a light finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
