As craft beer pioneers, we embarked on an expedition to brew the benchmark West Coast IPA. We ventured into the unknown and struck gold, discovering a tantalizing menagerie of hops. Simcoe for tropical and grapefruit zest, Columbus for hop pungency, Centennial for pine notes, Citra for citrus zest, and Cascade for floral aroma are layered throughout the brewing process. West Coast IPA exemplifies the Green Flash spirit of adventure and discovery.

I had this when it was just an IPA - trying it as a DIPA. I am still not really a fan of this beer. Smells of grapefruit, with a bit of other hops mixed in. Poors a slightly dirty copper penny color. Thin head, but the lacing lasts. Grapefruit, pine, sticky, resiny, a bit floral. Too much of a hop mix. It has a bit of a sweet malt backing, but I think the hops competing for what the actual taste is makes it overall not as enjoyable.

One of my favorite DIPA’s, dank and delicious. A classic version of the style that does not taste dated.

Pours clear golden with a good white head. Aromas of citrus and pine hops with a hint of malt. Medium carbonation and good mouth feel. Taste is zesty and fruity hops with a piney bitter finish and slight maltiness

On draft. If Green Flash set out to create a textbook West Coast IPA, then this is an excellent manifestation of that. Light malt body with a big, pungent and bitter hop profile. A fantastic beer, considering it’s readily available just about everywhere.

Draught at the BJ’S resturant at the Sunnyvale shopping mall. Short off white head. Clear dark amber color. Caramell and rubber hoppy aroma. Big hop taste with a balanced bitterness. Some balanced sweetness. Fine body to balance the bitterness.

Bottle from Brewdog shop. Pours amber to orange with finger of white head and good lacing. Medium carbonation. Aroma is glorious. Strong caramel malts and pine with marmelade, orange peel and lime. Taste is quite sweet and creamy, with a long bitter finish and with touch of soap from the Citra. Nice touch of booze on the finish, but surprisingly little considering the ABV. Impressive stuff, really enjoyed this one. Lovely malts and nearly all of my favourite hops!

Bottle from Appellation Wines Comely Bank. Appearance - deep amber with a nice fluffy head. Nose - cake mixture, light pine and resin. Light grapefruit. Taste - resin, grapefruit and cake again. Lime on the finish. Palate - close to medium bodied with a creamy texture and a long dry finish. Overall - great example of the style.

I do not wax on poetically about beer but I do know the quality of a beer once tasted. This review is not about my tastes but reinforces the numbers, which are arbitrary.
