COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Editor’s Note: If you had the 8.1% abv version marketed since 2014 as a Double India Pale Ale, this is the wrong beer page. Please rate under Green Flash West Coast IPA (2014 -).

This West Coast-Style India Pale Ale is extravagantly hopped, full flavored, medium bodied and copper colored. A menagerie of hops is combined throughout the brewing process to impart specific characteristics. Hops used include Simcoe for a unique fruitiness and grapefruit zest, Columbus for strong hop pungency, Centennial for pine and citrus notes, and Cascade for floral aroma.

Bottle...a must try for any IPA lover, but just shy of a double IPA. Beautiful reddish-gold color with light head which stays atop the beer throughout. Above average carbonation. Highly bitter, like licking a pink grapefruit sliced in half. Pine a secondary flavor. Good from beginning to end. Seems to be popular here now, as I’m seeing it in several of my regular watering holes.

Bottled. Thanks to Anders Holmskär. Clear pale amber colour with good head. Great, what we all want here, oozing aroma from the Simcoe hops, that gives mandarines and such. Good malt balance in mouthfeel with citrus and mandarine, which makes it perfectly hoppy bitter at say 60-70 IBU’s, and a good prominent hop flavour.

Pours a bright golden amber with a fairly dense half inch off-white head. Head retention and lacing are extremely good. This is what an IPA should look like - exceptional. Big citrus hop aromas with grapefruit, oranges and lemons playing a prominent role. There was also some grassy notes and a decent malt sweetness in the nose as well. Citrus hops are again the first item on the agenda with a stronger pine presence than I got in the aroma. There is a solid malt backbone which lends a pleasant sweetness to the taste. Unfortunately, there was a massive metallic bitterness at the finish, so this one may have been paste it’s prime. Medium bodied with some pretty good carbonation. Nice and prickly on the taste buds. I really liked this beer a lot outside of the metallic taste, which I think is freshness related. I will actively seek another bottle of this to rerate.

Seems almost perfect as a session IPA. Lots of citrusy grapefruity hops on the nose, completely dominating everything. Flavor is more hops, on a subtle malt base. Pointless to try to describe, I don’t pick up a lot of sublety. Just a really nice Session IPA. Sampled at Raleigh WBF.

UPDATED: JUL 21, 2009 Big piney hop aroma, but not as big as Stone IPA. Looks exactly like an IPA should. Bitter hops in the flavor, all throughout. nice malt presence as it warms up, sort of cookie/doughy. Medium bodied and medium carbo. On the sweet side. Has the hop bite but lacks the fresh leafy hop flavor i was hoping for. Gets astringent. It’s a great IPA but I thought it was missing something to make it really stand out. maybe I’m spoiled by California IPAs like Stone, Torpedo, Union Jack, Racer 5, etc. It was very bitter but it didn’t seem like 95 IBUs. And even though I’m in CA it’s still pretty pricey at $10 a 6 pack.

Pours a nice orange amber with a creamy one finger light orange head. Wonderfully hoppy aroma, sweet citrusy hops, resinous, very fresh, lightly waxy grapefruit peel. Flavor is a little subdued when compared to the aroma. Nice mellow citrusy flavors, lightly waxy, easy bitterness, sweet, grapefruit peel. Nice full mouthfeel, carbonation is very soft and pleasant, finishes a tad warm and more bitter and waxy than initially present in the flavor. Still a great IPA.

The color was golden/orange. The head was creamy, thin, and white. The aroma was simcoe hops, pine, citris, and dark fruit. The flavor was strong hops, citris, waxy/bitter, fruity, and pine. The palate was lively. The finish was hoppy.
