On Cask at the Bow Bar Winter Beer Festival (Edinburgh). Deep, deep brown/black with a good beige head. Intense coffee and chocolate nose. Charcoal. Rich, smooth, sweet body with subtle honey, coffee, hazelnut notes. Really, really great.

Bottle from Beers of Europe. Black pour with a beige head. Toffee, dark fruits and dark chocolate aromas. Coffee, wood and a little dark chocolate flavours. Deep finish of dark fruits and malts.

When held to the light the reveals its dark crimson colouring, otherwise it’s black with a substantial light tan head and a spidery lacing. The nose is of sweet roasted malts, raisins and other rich dark fruits; there’s a bit of a coffee thing here, a light ash aroma, but nothing of chocolate. In the mouth you get a big hit of malt and yeast, with the chocolate sitting well. If this was a tad more bitter I’d score it higher. Still it’s an enjoyable stout. The mouth feel is medium with a very creamy carbonation; alcohol is both present as heat and in the taste, though it’s got a sweetness that’s nice. It goes with the fruity malts to its finish, finding another layer of chocolate, almost a lactic edge. Bit of a strange one - as it doesn’t taste very dark, as you’d expect of an imperial stout. But it does taste good and ultimately that’s the crux.

Cask (gravity) @ Smithfield Hotel, 37 Swan St, Manchester, Greater Manchester England M4 5JZ.

Clear dark dark red brown color with a small average, frothy to creamy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white to white head. Aroma is moderate heavy malty, roasted, coffee, licorice, chocolate malt, light alcohol. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and light to moderate bitter with a long duration. Body is medium to full, texture is oily - syrupy, carbonation is flat, finish feel is moderate alcoholic. [20100121]

Cask (gravity dispense) at Chelmsford Winter Beer Festival, 4 February 2010. 10.5% ABV on this occasion, according to the festival programme. Not that dark for an Imperial Stout - definitely not opaque. No head. Lots of chocolate in the aroma and flavour. Sweetish. Some vinous notes. Quite thick but, conversely, very easy drinking. Perhaps a bit too easy drinking for a 10.5% beer. Overall, pretty enjoyable.

Cask conditioned gravity dispense Merchants Inn Rugby. A black beer with an off-white head. Full fruity vinuous aroma. Long mouthfeel with strong fruity notes. Not burnt or roasty. Not sure what style of beer this is attempting to be but it’s quite fine.

Cask, Peterborough Fest 09. Very dark brown with a beige foam. Aromas are coffee and molasses with some gritty grain. Dark chocolate with spices and liquorice. Flavours are dark chocolate and coffee bitterness with some sweet chocolate. Molasses with vinous notes and peppery alcohol. Better than I expected.
