Draught. Pours an extra dark brown, really this looks more like a porter with a neat, tan head. The nose is muted with some faint notes of mild chocolate, hickory, pumpernickel. It’s a rather tart brown ale, not hoppy, but tart in a way similar to wood or pumpernickel. There is no strong sweetness and the finish is slightly acrid. This is just okay.

on tap at the green man - asheville nc - this review is for the cask version - see notes below for the regular tap version. coffee roasted aroma along with a medium to dark brown color. nice thick foamy head. served at a good temp for cask. great conditioning in the cask - mouthfeel was excellent. flavor was very good for a brown ale (where i expect bland). sweet malts with a bit of roasted coffe (a bit out of character and almost porter like). if this were an official beer cometition it would lose points probably for being out of style - but nevertheless, it was very drinkable and enjoyable. the regular tap version was way over carbonated and you could barely taste anything amidst all of the abrasiveness. my wife - who normally hates cask beer - much preferred teh cask version.

Slightly amberish, not quite a brown ale in my opinion. Very light on the aroma and in the flavor, which drops right off in the finish. A bit of chocolate and caramel, but ends up getting slightly muddled and watered down in the finish.
