Wow! Creamy velvet body, hops, hops, hops, great hop aroma, lots of mild esb hop flavor, but not ’hoppy’, fantastic until the cask was kicked, one of the top 5 casks of all time. Wow!

Draught. Pours clear mahogany with a small, fizzy, white head, diminishing with spare lacing. Aroma is average malt (straw, bread, chocolate), average hop (grass), average yeast (dough) with notes of pear and apple. Medium bodied, slick texture, average carbonation, and a bitter finish. Long duration, light sweetness, moderate acidity, and heavy bitterness. Light chocolate, caramel notes in the flavor.

On tap at Jack of the Wood, Asheville NC, 6 July 2006. Copper colour. More malt than hop on the nose and palate. Caramel in the flavour. Restrained, earthy, UK style hops. Smooth mouthfeel. Pleasant enough but not one of the more striking of the Jack in the Wood beers.

Tap at the brewpub on 2/3/08: Transparent copper orange with a wispy-lacing white head. Aroma of sweet toasty caramel malty notes and some earthy piny English hops. Body starts with good fullness and sweet toasty caramel maltiness balanced with a resiny hop bitterness. Smooth, true to style and enjoyable, a good ESB.
