It is hard to call this an Amber ale because it is made in Marzen fashion. The beer pours clean and tastes clean. The caramel definitely comes through, but there is enough complexity in the maltiness of the flavor to keep it exciting sip to sip. The nose is quite enjoyable for a marzen style beer with a mix of maple, caramel and a hint of orange. Like many beers I have had from Green Man, this is solid. I believe this brewery will get more appreciation as it keeps moving into distribution.

2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Draft at Thirsty Monk South. Pours brownish with a white head. Leaves trace lacing in the glass. Not much in the nose. A slight caramel malt note on the tongue. Finishes clean. Kind of boring even given the style.

3 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
12 oz. Clear amber with a lasting spit of cream and bubbles. Nose is semi-scorched earthy grain and popcorn with maybe a hint of cookie. Taste is nearly over-roasted grain, pithy dried grass, earthy toffee, biscuit, and touches of tart apple and cardboard. Near-medium body is slightly more to the dry side than the typical Marzen/fest bier and has smooth, average carbonation. This is a strange beer. The aroma and initial taste have some off-putting burnt popcorn notes that fade into a pretty nice flavor. The lingering finish is actually really nice and makes me want to sip more, but then there’s the scorched grain again...

Bottle. Amber color. Tan head. Clearish. Meh. Would be my first impression. Funky taste.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours a soft autumn leaf amber with one finger of dirty white head. Nose is
malty with some grainy notes and herbal hop character. Earthy malt.
Flavor leans grainy/toasty at the front with a touch of sweetness. There is a persistent bitterness in the flavor that I cannot account for and does not benefit the beer. The mouthfeel needs some work too. Feels like it bottoms out at the end and has a slightly watery character with a grainy bitterness.

Sampled at 2012 Knoxville Brewer’s Jam. Copper, loose white head. Smells like caramel and a little bit of cinnamon. Taste also has caramel and cinnamon, with a dryish finish.
