COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
English-Style Imperial Stout is rich and dessert-like and exhibits powerful malt flavors and hints of dark fruits. Large amounts of roasted malts give an opaque black color and a velvety texture suggesting unsweetened cocoa. Dry-hopped with East Kent Goldings and aged for three months in cask. Brewed by John Stuart.

Tap at the brewpub on 2/3/08: Pours an opaque black with dark brown edges and a stringy-lacing tan head. Sweet dark caramel and chocolate nose has some dark fruity complexity and licorice notes. Body starts fairly full and earthy dark caramely sweet with rich dark chocolate complexity and some molasses and raisins before a slightly bitter, but mostly sweet finish. Nicely balanced and flavorful. The cask version has an even creamier head and mouthfeel with good licorice flavor.

Served on draft at the brewpub. Pours a very dark color appearing black in the glass. Large creamy head with good head retention and lacing. Aroma of sweet roasted malts, nutty notes, coffee and chocolate. Taste is sweet, sweet malts with some roastiness. Almost sugary. Some caramela and toffee and a faint hoppy finish. Medium-full bodied.

Tap at Green Man brewery tasting room. Pours a deep dark brown near black with a foamy lasting tan head. Aroma is nutty, big roast, bittersweet chocolate, earthy and herbal hops, a bit of anise and licorice- a bit oily. Flavor is also oily with anise seed, tar, and big black chocolate malts, some burnt malts, get a bit harsh- some roast, light coffee, and grassy and fruity hops. Finish is fairly smooth.

Draft at Jack of the Wood. Jet black with a little light brown head. Burnt coffee and some chocolate on the nose. Not as overpowering a smell as many imperial stouts. Warming, smoky coffee flavors with some sweetness...maybe caramel? This guy’s really well balanced and creamy and overall a great beer from a cool brewpub.

Draft @ brewpub. Labeled as an RIS, but wasn’t poured in proper glassware (I’m picky). I thought this was a standout while I was drinking in Asheville. Dark pour here with an alluring and creamy tan head. Deep, roasted chocolate malts round the palate with a slight burn on the front end. After I drank this I was impressed by the balance that made it dry and bitter. A slight hint of ashy smoke on the finish. Great brew.

On draft at Jack of the wood after thanksgiving. They had it labeled as *russian imperial stout* so i hope this is the same beer. Near black pour with a minimal ring of dark tan head. Aroma is not all that strong but does contain notes of plum, alcohol, and light chocolate. Lots of alcohol in the flavor, along with chocolate, roast malt, and rum soaked fruits. Id imagine this would improve with some cellaring. Some dark cherry flavors emerge as it warms.
