4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 mattvervack (28) - Atlanta, Georgia, USA - MAY 26, 2009
At least I assume I have the right IPA. It was on cask at the brewery, and the beertender told me it was the normal IPA with minor additions when it is casked. I am rating it high because it is the best cask ale I have had in the US. I miss the heck out of real ale and this guy is really trying to get it right, and coming very close.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 merlin48 (656) - Jenkins, Kentucky, USA - MAY 22, 2009
On tap at 12 Bones Barbecue in Asheville. Slightly hazed, dark orange with a small offwhite head. Aroma is herbal and minty, with honey and pink grapefruit notes. Medium body has smooth carbonation. Taste is nicely balanced between the honey/caramel maltiness and the herbal/floral bitter hops. On the bitter side, but the biscuity malt balances very well. Nicely done.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Dickinsonbeer (5075) - Hoboken, New Jersey, USA - MAY 2, 2009
On tap at Jack of the Wood. Pours a deep hazy orange/amber with a thin head. Aroma is earthy, moderately hopped- zesty, tea, and floral with slight citrus hops and a honey-like caramel malt backbone. Ok earthy and green hop flavor, good malty backbone and moderate body, tea and floral hops and a bit of orange peel with more caramel. Green and slightly harsh bitterness, but overall it was drinkable and not bad.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Drake (6497) - Ivy, Virginia, USA - MAR 6, 2009
Served on draft at the brewpub as part of a sampler. Pours a hazy amber color with a small head. Average retention and nice lacing. Aroma is sweet malts and floral, fruity hops. Taste is bitter citrus hops. Not too complex. Medium bodied.
3 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 DukeBrewDevil (724) - Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA - JAN 21, 2009
Draft at Jack of the Wood. Amber color, clear, not much head. The extremely thin nose had me thinking this beer was going to be really weak, but I wasn’t disappointed by the taste. It wasn’t the most complex or amazing IPA but had a solid bitter bite and good balance. The finish was a touch stickier than I’d like.
3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20 Butters (3321) - Richmond, Virginia, USA - OCT 30, 2008
Had both the standard and cask versions on draft at the brewery. Of all their beers, this was the best looking. Big billowing cream head atop an opaquish orange body. Aroma is huge pine and some butter with a hint of mold. Medium velvet mouthfeel with a sweet sticky finish.

Pretty weak IPA. Had the cask version. Not a big fan of cask beer. nothing special and something i will not seek out again.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 dchmela (2405) - Orlando, Florida, USA - SEP 8, 2008
Picked up a growler of this when I was in Asheville. Pours a nice deep copper with little head. Malty aroma with a big hop presence. Lots of citrus and pine. Smooth malt driven taste with nicely balanced citrusy hops. Leaves just a hint of hop bitterness behind on the finish. I find this to be my session IPA when in Asheville.
