UPDATED: MAR 15, 2007 Draught. This is a rich opaque black brew with a nitro cascade that leaves a dense, even tan head. This has strong toasted grains in the nose with some fine pipe smoke. This is one of the oattiest stouts I’ve ever had. It’s like chocolate oatmeal. This is a deep creamy beer with a very silky palate and some creamy sweetness in the finish. Oh yeah, huge oats. [sampled most recently on 3-14-07] These days this stout is a notch less oaty, but still quite silky and delicious. Great balance of syrupy chocolate, coffee, and oatmeal.

on draught- My first trip to Jack of the Wood was not enjoyable, so I was surprised this time to find a rich opaque black brew cascading slowly in my glass after ordering. A dense, even tan head remained.

Draft at the brewpub. Frankly, this was hard to distinguish from their porter, so everything I said about that one applies here too. This is slightly more bitter, which is the only thing my amateur palate could discern between the two. Decent. (#4314, 10/5/2011)

Both draft and cask-conditioned at Jack of the Wood. Very dark brown with hints of ruby when held to the light. The cask-conditioned version poured up a much creamier and lacier head. Aroma is earthy and roasty. Cask-conditioned version reveals touches of fruity esters. Chocolate malt sweetness with coffee and dark unsweetened cocoa. Like the aroma, cask-conditioned version has more noticeable fruit esters in the flavor. Finish is balanced and slightly sweet (cask tastes a little sweeter and softer). Cask version also has excellent creamy mouthfeel. Overall, a very nice stout - the cask conditioned version was a fun treat, too.

Solid "English style" stout. Sweet. Notes of coffee and chocolate. Pours moderately thick with a robust head. Coffee dominates the nose. Very smooth and easy to drink. Perhaps a session-type.

Draft at brewer. Pours a jet black with a thin tan head. Scent is roasted malt goodness with a hint of chocolate. Taste is burned malt, smoke and chocolate. Creamy feel with a bitter finish. Tried the cask version as well, tasted a tad better but felt thinner.

Black pour with small tan head. Aroma of chocolate and roasted coffee. Creamy in body and flavor had more chocolate. This is almost interchangeable with their porter, though slightly better.

Had this on draft at the Jack of the Wood shortly after St. Patty’s Day. They were calling it their Irish Stout. I thought they had actually given me a guinness and claimed it for their own! Near black pour with ample creamy tan head. Aroma is light (probably due to the nitro) with subtle chocolate, roast, oats, and some dark berry hints in the flavor. Wonderfully creamy body. I could drink this all night long. One of the best beers I’ve ever had.
