3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 TheGrandMaster (2313) - Auckland, NEW ZEALAND - JUL 2, 2008
Bottle, a carbonated and clear dark amber with a white foamy head. Caramal malt on the nose, piney, with some woody spice. Pretty smooth at first, biscuity malt on the palate, with some resiny whiskey flavour, but greater fruity hops. Pleasingly bitter and spicy through the swallow, though I found the finish a bit earthy. The best Green Man brew I have tasted to date.

UPDATED: JUL 18, 2009 Bottle. Clear deep amber, mediocre beige head that retains modestly. Aroma of sweet spicy barley candy, hints of butterscotch and whisky. The palate starts with soft vanilla rye whiskey tones, some soft spiciness, with underlying dark caramel. This time around was a better experience (probably owing to freshness), with fuller flavours and a bigger mouthfeel.

nice mahogany colour, clear but deep. head doesn’t last long. in the aroma the whisky element comes out as medicinal and phenolic (smoker’s toothpaste) with also some warm bocky malt smells. interesting, i didnt realise before but bock+whisky = scotch ale. full bodied in the mouth, with good melanoidins, but then drying out in the finish well, with some juicy acidity. a well-made and intriguing beer, and good to have now that emersons whisky porter isn’t around anymore.

Bottled. An amber beer with a beige head. The aroma is sweet with notes of malt, some weird spices, whiskey, and wood. The aroma is sweet with notes of malt, caramel, and alcohol, leading to a dry woody finish. Thanks Papsoe for sharing this.

Dark brown, almost no head. Aroma of brown sugar and whiskey. Flavour is the same sweet molasses-brown sugar and whickey flavour. Too sweet and they could amp up the whiskey.

Bottle. Red amber colour, white head. Aromas of malt, bit of fruit from the oak perhaps. Tastes quite nice, can actually taste whiskey from the oak, alcohol provides some sweetness. Very enjoyable.
