Decent Black IPA. The hops combine for a soapy like character that Im not a huge fan of but the roasty backbone is there and the hop presence is strong.

Huge thanks to panantap for tossing in this extra, Smells like a hill farmstead beer. Good light roasty flavors. This is pretty tasty.

On tap. Pours deepest black, slightly brown around the edges, with a finger and a half of tight khaki-brown head. Nose is big grain, slightly roasted, with hints of spice, earth, and stone fruit. An awesome combination. Taste is medium sweet with some bitterness coming through. Not monstrously bitter, but rather well balanced. Palate is full, round, bright in spots with a long bitter finish with a little bite. Iíve been dying to try this and I was not disappointed. Really nice brew and Iíll surely have it again.

12oz bottle, no date. Thanks to Kan for the bottle! Pours deep mahogany--black in the glass--with a one finger creamy beige head, fading to a thick film before long. Roasted malt dominates the nose, but doesnít seem to be burnt at all. There is also a bit of toasted malt and fairly light caramel, a good amount of piney hops following, tinge of florals behind. Flavor has stronger pine notes. Still fairly roasty, some alcohol showing up in the dry finish, just a bit burnt. Bitterness peaked at a 4-5 in the dry finish. Medium body with low smooth carbonation. This beer is more like a hoppy porter, and a bit like a less tasty version of 3F Alpha Klaus.

Bottle: The aroma consists of moderate chocolate, pine, and light roasted nuts. It pours dark brown with some reddish-orange highlights and a large beige head with great retention and lots of clumpy lacing. The flavor starts with chocolate and a touch of caramel. The finish has moderate roasted nuttiness and pine. Itís medium bodied with light-moderate carbonation. Overall, itís a hoppy Porter. Calling it a Black IPA is a bit of a stretch...at least in terms of flavor profile.

Full pour and first pint had at greenbush, rated last... Pours a deeper mostly opaque dark reddish black hue. A reluctant wispy ring if light beige head rests on top... Aroma of green citrusy pine hope, lighter roast and grain on the backend. Solid and without that yeast character. Thank goodness for that... Flavors follow suit consistently with a similar hop profile with more of a firmly planted roasted malt and grain presence. Medium bodied with adequate carbonation. A slightly bitter roast finish presents itself late.

Draft at Kumaís. Pours a slightly murky dark brown verging on black, tan head. Nose is a blast of roast, floral hops, citrus and pine. The roast is too much for the style here. Lots of hops come across, though. On tasting, light savory roast is set aside for the strongly citrusy hop profile. Very firm bitterness enhanced by the drying roast. Clean fermentation but the roastiness is a bit distracting, keeping it from hitting the upper echelon. Solid.

Draft at Crunchyís, East Lansing. Opaque deep brown body, thin ring of cream-colored carbonation. Nose of dry roasted malts and charred hops. Dry, creamy body, thin and acidic with huge notes of roasted coffee and hints of brown sugar and red wine. Finishes with a medley of tannic leafy hops. Quite complex.
