2.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20
Bottle, pours a dark brown to black with a large rocky light brown head. Nose is chocolate with some grassy notes. Smells like bakers chocolate and flour. Taste is a gawd awful burnt hop flavor at first. Yup, this is why I donít like Black IPAs. Just a muddled mess of hops, roast, and armpits. The hops and chocolate/roast are not balanced at all and fight each other for which can be most aggressive. and all they do is smother each other and the consumer is left with the bloody mess of the aftermath of a 12 round steel cage fight.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Taster at Standard Market, and Iím finally popping the cap on my first Greenbush beer, too. Oh, yes, Amarillo right up the nose on the first sniff. This would indeed be a beer to inspire anger. Black with some brown highlight, and a persistent stoutlike-head. Taste is hit up hard by catbox Amarillo and Simcoe, which overrides much of the malt profile. Still, I get some spiciness from wheat more than any roastiness. A very light mouthfeel makes up for the rough palate, light carbonation makes it feel almost like there was some nitro involved (which there wasnít). Alcohol starts to kick in after the second ounce, so be careful not to swig this.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from my good friend in Grand Rapids. Pours nearly black with a mountainous foamy head that leaves behind sea foam type lacing. Aroma is pleasant with roast, coffee and heavy citrus hops. The sweetness of the malt and bitterness of the hops mellow each other out, but the flavor combination is slightly odd IMHO. The beer has a nice creamy mouthfeel and the body is medium to medium-full. Cool beer; worth trying.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Tap: Black, traced with a wood-stained shade of dark brown around the edge, capped with a coffee-cream colored head that mellows out slowly, leaving behind some spotty lacing. Aroma is heavy chocolate malt, dry cocoa powder, crushed coffee beans, burnt caramel, roast, & a back-end of mostly hoppage; leaves, mild pine, citrus peel. The taste really amplifies the citric presence of the hops... peppery white grapefruit & tangerine flesh, actually almost tart for a split second before the herbal & more ashy notes come in with the heavy bitterness. Malty finish & aftertaste with roasted coffee beans, cocoa dust, burnt malt, & charred wood, all meshed with the decrescendo of citric & pine-forward hops. Not bad, but something wasnít meshing perfectly between the malt & hops, for some reason. Definitely a nice brew, but nothing to go crazy over.
