Tap: Deep brown hue with purplish highlights topped by a small fading head. The aroma is quite striking: catty, resiny, leafy, minty, grapefruit, mango, light hop spice, Carafa and ashy, toasted, chocolate, coffee and biscuity malts. The taste is fruity (citrus and plum) with a burnt coffee and ashy undertone. Some chocolate, caramel and nutty tones before a slight clove and pepper hop spice finish. Well done Black IPA has it is not astringent but displays hop characteristics cleanly. The mouth feel is lively, sharp and moderately carbonated that keeps it fresh, slight ashy finish. Overall very solid offering and quite yummy, had two pint glasses of this.

Sampler on tap at the brewpub (Sawyer, MI). Pours a dark blackish brown hue, near opaque with glowing brownish edghes, a frothy offwhite head sits atop, laces small. Aromas are roasty malts and citrusy hops, florals, and toast. Some anise, subtle, and some good hops. Initial is medium bodied offering some ok roast and toast, a healthy citrusy hops. Grapefruit, lemons, oranges, florals cache into roast, toast, some subtle dark sweetness. A really great Black IPA, healthy hops of citrusy life with roast, toast, and a lack of body (which works in itís favor). Darker and roasty with a copious American hop slant. Finish is roasty, hoppy, lingering citrus and dryness. Very well done.

growler... dark brown with a light tan head, held up good for a growler... this is on the roastier spectrum for a black ipa but if you enjoy that youíre going to love this, excellent

Had on tap for $5.99 a pint at Terryís Terrace in Harrison Township (?), Michigan. Just not as impressed as the majority of people here. Appearance: Pitch black with a creamy finger or two of head. Pretty gorgeous, if I may say so. The lacing doesnít last through the whole glass, but itís nice looking regardless. Smell: Quite interesting, like the taste is... smells like a stout or dark coffee with hops. Has roasted malts, coffee, and... hops. Taste: A lot like the smell, but with tastes of char and smoke as well. The hops arenít present initially, but kick in on the finish. It definitely has a different taste for the average craft beer drinker (whatever that means), but itís certainly not an unpleasant one. I definitely preferred this beer when it was a little bit colder than room temperature -- once it warmed up, the alcohol could be traced, there was a warmth in the throat, the primary taste was that of smoked wood, and the bitterness really kicked in. I didnít hate it, but it was certainly tastier within the first 15-20 minutes of having it, as it seemed to just be more balanced. It isnít my favorite of the style, but it has a unique taste to it... it had me thinking, and it really changes quite a lot the more it warms up. Wouldnít be my go-to black ale, but itís a very nice offering from a brewery that I have never heard of. Good going, Greenbush.

Bottle from Champanes, this ale had a brown-black pour and it gave a one finger tan colored head that recedes to a thin cover and ring, this beer was opaque but I could see fine bubbles climbing the sides of the glass, there was some spots and small fingers of lacing on the glass, the bottom of the bottle had a layer of dark sediment, when first poured, there were aromas of citrus and grass hops, but the hops sort of drifted away a bit, also, there was roasted malt, coffee, faint dry chocolate, and some dark fruit notes, it had flavors of roasted malt, bitter hops, coffee, faint chocolate and some prune date dark fruit but not as sweet, faint malt and molasses sweetness, the finish had some hop bitterness with malt trailing, the mouth feel was nice with a less than medium with some creaminess, it had average carbonation, one of the better Black IPAs I had sampled, I would recommend.

Dark pour with a brown head. Aroma is roasted malt and fruity hops. Yum! Taste is a great balance of roasted malt and fruit(citrus) hops. So tasty. Green Bush is a 2.5 hour drive for me- sounds like a summer trip.

This is a dark beer with a big foamy beige head. Some cereal grains, some of them burnt, and citrus hops in the nose. Strong grapefruit juice and pine hop flavors with some roasted grains and burnt toast flavors. There is a wet caramel sweetness. The is a full flavored, sweet hoppy beer.
