Greenbush Brewing Company produced this tasty treat with Cleetus of City Provisions. Brewed with loads of Centennial hops & Black Strap Molasses this beer is bold, and lots of fun. It’s what a nice American Strong Ale should be, a balance of sweet malts & bitter hops. Names was inspired by the former DJ of Public Enemy.

This special version was aged in Bourbon Barrels.

Day 9 of Advent. The pour is a dark murky brown, dirty river water. The aroma is pretty much all whiskey. The taste is a but harsh, very boozy, a lot of whiskey characteristics. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

From notes. Finally getting around to adding beers from the Ypsi Summer Beerfest! Enjoyed on July 25. The pour is a strange brown color with a light tan frothy head (maybe half a finger high) and a decent clinging lace. The aroma is heavy on malty caramel, a little barrel, and a whole lot of bourbon. This thing is pretty warm on the nose. There is a little vanilla, but then it just sinks a little back to the booze. The flavor is a little more woody and there is a definite caramel flavor. It’s really sweet and a little thicker than I imagined, probably the molasses. The mouth feel is a little light, but it does cling well. The aftertaste is pretty hot, consisting of caramel and vanilla

Tap: Swampy, muddled brown with a lazy, beige bubble form barely large enough to be called a film that fades very quickly. Aroma full of caramel malt & sticky toffee, mild bourbon, a hint of wood, vanilla, & a touch of sweet molasses & licorice to close things out. Tastes like caramel candies coated in whiskey flavored syrup with an undeniable sweetness that I wanna say is from the molasses. Toffee, wood, prune & whiskey are among the strongest flavors with a hint of sweet brown sugar in the finish (which I also might be mistaking for the molasses?) The tannic notes from the barrel aging get a little astringent & overly dry with some warmth, & the whiskey gets more pungent. Still a good beer, but with some more refinement, it could be great. Lightly sticky mouth coating. A strong brew.

Tap. Sludgy brown with absolutely no head. Flat with no carbonation. Oakey. Shudder inducing. Boozy, malty. A complete mess.

Draft sample. Poured hazy dark brown color with an average frothy light brown head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate to heavy toasted sweet malt, wood with earthy hop aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy complex bittersweet flavor with a medium to heavy bittersweet finish of moderate to long duration. This is a better version of standout beer.

Sample at 2013 MBG Winter Beer Festival. Big barrel aromas and flavor. Slick mouthfeel. Dark sugars towards the finish.

Silphium (3191) - East Lansing, Michigan, USA - AUG 31, 2012
Draft at the 2012 Michigan Brewer’s Guild Winter Beer Festival, Grand Rapids. Strong barrel notes in the aroma and body; body with caramel and brown sugar, tart and sweet, but dominated by oak.
