3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 TheAlum (3299) - Lisle, USA - OCT 25, 2011
Sampled on tap at Haymarket (Chicago, IL). Pours a well hazed glowing amber pour, some sunset elements with a big cakey offwhite head atop, sticks around well and laces well overall. Aromas are some gentle hops, lemons and grass mixing with touches of florals, bread and dough, touches of crackers, gentle grapefruit works it’s way in as it warms. Initial is medium bodied, offering some sweetness up front paired with fruity citrus. Some lemon and orange meet a light dry grassy hop and some malt body, nothing sweet, bready and a bit crackery, pale malts. Middle starts to build a decent bitterness showing more of the grapefruit and florals. A touch sweet and floral as I get further in, but a very pretty beer. Finish shows some mellow sweetness and cardboardy/paper elements mixing with lemons, grapefruit, florals, some grass and gentle dry hops. The beer has some nice elements, throwing a decent dose of sweeter fruity orange up front and getting a bit more dry and earthy into the finish. It’s not a bad beer, but does fall a bit by the wayside to the other hoppy beers I’ve had on tap at the brewpub. Ok. Compared to the other ratings, perhaps the age of the distribution system has been at work here.. Compared to all other Greenbush beers fresh at the brewpub. With the description, I just imagined a more intense and complex hop "Pop".

Draft sample. Poured hazy copper color with an average frothy off-white head that lasted with good lacing. Moderate complex earthy and sour citrus hop aroma. Medium body with a slick texture and soft carbonation. Moderate to heavy bitter flavor with a moderate to heavy bittersweet finish of medium duration. Very good brew.

Strong malt aroma. Very nice thick head, substantial coating. Earthy hops and caramel flavors. Bold body and relentless bitter end!

These Michigan breweries love the herbal, spicier IPAs, and I do too, a solid offering on draft.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours a slightly hazy gold with a white head that dissipates slowly to the edges and laces. Aroma has a light fruit note with citrus and a strong grain backbone. Flavor has light citrus and flora with backing grassy hops and grain.

12oz Bottle. Many thanks to Sean for my first taste of this brewery. Oh dear. Filthy earthen soured aroma. Flavor is disastrous. I think it’s infected, or it involved a 12-day mash and 3-day wort cooling process. Gah. A sour, overly bitter, yeasty soup. At least it’s carbonated. And somehow, at 6.7% it’s hot, very hot. What happened? Are they sure there’s no dunegrass in this?
3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 pantanap (2838) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - JAN 28, 2012
On tap at greenbush... Pours a hazy cidery orange brown pour and topped with a thin creamy white head... Aroma of sweet Belgian yeast and some grassy earthy bitterness .. Flavors have a mostly citrus hop component with a sweeter middle and more if a bitter biting finish. A little more of that yeast profile again. Slightly bigger than medium bodied. Slightly harsh on the backend.

Draft... Murky ugly orange copper, excellent tope head with unreal lacing makes up... a really boring west coast ipa, not fresh, mostly hops... Pass

Draft at Haymarket. Pours a deep verging on amber with an offwhite head. The nose is oddly restrained relative to the hops. Earthy malt with an odd clove note that reminds me of the oktoberfest. floral and light caramel and nutmeg as well. On tasting, it just doesn’t come together. soft bitterness and more of that clove note. Fermentation is off on this one and the hops lack a pop, like I’d expect from an IPA. A shame.

On tap at Hopcat. I don’t know if this was just a bad keg, or what, but I did not like this. It reminded me of an extract based homebrew I could go home and make from 3 year old ingredients lying in my basement/deep freeze. Very non-complex, stale bread flavors.
