2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 NobleSquirrel (2677) - Chicago, USA - JAN 17, 2012
Draft at Haymarket. Another really big beer and a bit more in Greenbush’s wheelhouse, imo. Pours a lightly hazed reddish bronze. The nose shows some sweetness and a distinct peppery note, along with a medicinal phenol component. The nose is fine. On tasting, there is a light cherry tart note that i snice then it gets kind of sloppy. The yeast profile gets overbearing with phenol and pepper taking away from the malt profile. Too high of temps. Pick up some caramel and fruit in the nose towards the end. Meh.

On tap at Greenbush Brewpub. Semi hazy copper with a thin tan head. Aroma is fruity and sweet with sugar, dark fruit and light yeast. Taste of caramel, fruit, yeast, alcohol and candy sugar. Decent.
4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 BBB63 (5028) - La Porte, Indiana, USA - MAY 25, 2012
Tap initially and bottle later: Coppery hue with a small but lasting head. The aroma has notes of Special B (raisins, dates, plum) crystal, candi sugar, biscuit, chocolate malts with a slight noble grassy hop ester. There is slight band-aid but overall the nose is great. The taste has a wonderful dark fruity twang with sweet malt and herbal hop finish. Candy, bread, splash of spice along with noticeable but not brash alcohol. The mouth feel is oily and smooth but this could use a tad more carbonation. Nearly spot on, Mikey Likey!

Draft sample at GBB. Poured clear dark bronze color with average frothy brown head that lasted with good lscing. Complex toasted caramel malt aroma. Medium to full body with a creamy texture and soft carbonation. Medium toasted sweet malt flavor with a medium sweet finish of moderate duration. Interesting solid brew.
2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 Frank (2061) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - DEC 18, 2011
A big, sticky and malty take on this Belgian style. Not mcuh yeast character but tasty for what it is. Lots of fruit and deep malt character.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 TheAlum (3299) - Lisle, Illinois, USA - OCT 25, 2011
6 oz pour on tap at the brewpub (Sawyer, MI). Pours a nice darker amber pour, emphasizing some carmel colors and some brown. Some fiery dark gold and orange in the edges. A small frothy offwhite head dies to a ring, laces small, ring clinger. Aromas are a plethora of sweet carmelized malts, toast, brown sugar. A faint dash of cocoa, some pear and apples. Initial is medium bodied offering toast and carmelized malts, brown sugar, some mellow darker sweetness, apples and gentle spice. A part of vanilla, touch of cocoa. A good nice toasty quality moves into a thicker malts feel. Fruity and lively, yet with a darker fuller slant. Finish is some dark fruit, maybe a touch of anise, but quite faint. Pretty nice, a dubbel with a couple levels, a bit complex in my book compared to some of the typical American versions you’ll find. Pretty nice, a touch hot.
