Pours amber, brown with a quickly dissapearing head. Aroma is sweet wort, toast and light blueberry. The first thing you notice is the sweet maltiness of rich caramel which is quickly cut with a sharp, lingering hop bite. A bit heavier body if it is a Marzen which is just fine with me. Very unique interpretation of the style.

Draft at Owen & Engine. I must have had a different batch of this than everyone else. Pours looking appropriate, deep copper with a frothy off-white head. It’s downhill from there. The nose is a trainwreck with minty and peppery phenolics. Very not-clean and just strange. Bread crust in the background, but the phenolics are just wrong. On tasting, it’s no better. Nutmeg and peppermint notes spread on a faint bready malt profile. I have no idea how this made it past QA. Bad.

6 oz pour on tap at the brewpub (Sawyer, MI). Pours a rich copper hue, good haze, fiery edges, copper hues, with a frothy tannish head, offwhite maybe with a good thicker layer, ok lacing. Aromas are crisp grains, toast and biscuits mixing into toffee and caramel. A faint waft of dark fruit, some tea, faint spicy hop and yeast. Initial is lighter end of medium bodied offering toffee and caramel, biscuits and some red fruit up front. Touches of soap and toast, light dryness pushes into more fruity qualities. Finish is a touch of spice and dryness, toast, and some fruity sweetness which seems a touch out of place. Remains red fruity and toffee filled, touches of toast and dry biscuits are gentle. Not bad, but very different in my book.. Lacking a yeasty spice or spicy hop. A little sweet for what I was expecting. More toast and pretzel as I get further into it, drying it out a bit more. It’s an odd one, but I dug it.

Tap: Nearly mahogany hued with an initial big fluffy off-white head and excellent lace. The aroma has notes of rich caramel and aromatic malts, earthy esters, noble hops, and light fruit and herbal esters. The taste starts with sweet malts (a bit bready as well) with some twangy fruit and sublime bitterness, yeasty. The mouth feel is smooth and slick and mostly clean finish. Really nice version IMO.
