3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Leighton (6956) - London, ENGLAND - MAY 17, 2013
Bottle at Bruce’s, London. Cheers to Kenny! Pours deep brown with a creamy beige head. Some dark fruits in the nose, mild roast, grapefruit. Medium to big sweet flavor, charred wood and earth bitterness, grapefruit and orange, definitely some alcohol, baking cocoa. Full bodied with fine carbonation. Moderate warmth to finish, decent resins, charred bread, wood, burnt pine, some dry cocoa, toasted grass, some grapefruit. Pretty nice stuff. Drinks well for the strength.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 peteinSD (958) - San Diego, California, USA - MAY 9, 2013
Bottle from Brian - thanks! Pours black with a dark tan head. Aroma is thick, barley win style malt with some roast and a peppering of hop bitterness. Taste is very sweet with heavy malt and alcohol fumes. There’s also some piney bitterness. Mouthfeel is smooth and coating. Complete beast of a beer and way over the top.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 hopscotch (8215) - Vero Beach, Florida, USA - JAN 22, 2013
Bottle... Blazer’s low-key O-Town Throwdown 2012… Tar black ale with a mid-sized, creamy, khaki-colored head. Fantastic retention. The bouquet is a malty, roasty, herbal marriage of charcoal, dark chocolate and fresh pot - not bong water - I’m talking about a fresh, sticky bud. Full-bodied and syrupy with tingly carbonation. The flavor is big-time sweet – not necessarily a bad thing - with loads of dark chocolate malt and hempen hops – overall, just very sugary and sweet. Burnt, pot-smoky, sweet finish. Bottle courtesy of BBB63!
2.2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20 NobleSquirrel (3286) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - DEC 27, 2012
Bottle from Adam, thanks! WTF is this? Pours a deep brown, near black. Nose has sticky hops, resin and onion, soy sauce. On tasting, too much alcohol, too much body, too sweet. Weird soy notes from the dark malts dominate. Moderate bitterness but just plain strange...
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 pantanap (3153) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - DEC 21, 2012
22oz bottle. Thanks to Adam for sharing... Pours a deep stouty thick black hue, reddish edges and a wispy tan head... Aroma of sweet dark fruit and chocolate and hints of citrus hops. Honey sweet throughout. Ok... Flavors are thick and cloying with dark fruits and citrusy hop profile that plays a backing role. Thick bodied and full. Too big and more of an imperial stout with an added hop backing. Not the greatest.

22oz bottle picked up from the brewpub a couple weeks ago. Marked as 156 IBU and 14.6% ABV (this is my first Thanksgiving beer...ohhh family). Pours a black body with a finger-width, dense and creamy, dark brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is intense grapefruit pines, earth, and florals with a nice roast presence and a firm, toasty chocolate malt backing with a bit of a chewy biscuit. Flavor is similar. Plenty of piney, aggressive grapefruits and florals with a bit of an earthiness to balance out the huge, bulky malt backing. Slightly chewy and toasty chocolates with some biscuity notes and a nice roast that comes out more towards the end with a slight ashy touch. Finishes dry, roasty, bitter, and filled with grapefruit citrus pines and florals that balance the malt sweetness really well. Lengthy aftertaste following a full, ever-so-slightly sticky and chewy body with a soft, medium-light carbonation. Overall, a really well done, gigantic Black IPA. Tons of grapefruit pines and florals to balance the huge malt backing with a nice roast balance that never gets too big. Pretty impressive.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 TheAlum (4289) - Lisle, Illinois, USA - NOV 3, 2012
Draft on tap at the brewpub (Sawyer, MI). Pours a rich deep blackish pour, dark and hazy, deep near opaque hues. Blackish dirth, with a big cakey brown head atop. Stays good sized and laces ok overall. Sticks around. Aromas are a rich offering of bitter piney hops, florals and grapefruit mish mashed together. Grapefruit rind and bitter citrus really dominate as it warms, covering up some hefty black malt, biscuit, and darker toasty and roasty elements. Initial is bigger bodied, offering palate clinging thickness, a bit chewy. Rich bitterness up front shows roast and cocoa, black malts and some toffee. Not sweet, but thick. Bigger dryness, mellow roast, and a hefty hop profile gives good bitterness, lingering and trailing citrus, pine. A kiss of ABV heat into the backend, thicker elements show some roasty ash, some kisses of dark fruit dance in and out, some cocoa and darkness. Gentle sweetness, lingering stronger floral and pine and grapefruit citrus bent into the backend and finish. Pretty solid offering here. I thought it might be much more offensive, but this is a bit thick, inviting, big hop presence while still covering up that hefty ABV bill with what it offers. Richer flavors, great hop leap through the experience, but never bracing. Well done essentially well hopped Strong Black Ale, staying away from a big brooding roast profile. Nice. Looked great. Flavors are a bit more average, but balance and experience really play out well.
