4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 BBB63 (5406) - La Porte, Indiana, USA - AUG 20, 2011
Tap: A dark Belgian hybrid ale that pays tribute to both the big abbey quad ales along with a nod toward the hoppier Belgians like Duvel. The beer has a deep coppery near purplish hue with some amber highlights topped by a fading fizzy off-white head. The aroma screaming of dark fruits (plum, dates, raisins), Special B roast and honey along with a slight yeast produced spicy aromatic, floral phenols and a touch of good old American alpha hops. The taste is yeast and malt driven with dark fruits and molasses background. Earthy and Abbey like but the fruit addition kick it up a level along with the shot of resiny bitterness. Faint chocolate covered raisins and pepper found more toward the finish. Smart carbonation, just enough to keep it moving on the palate yet kept an oily lush overtone. This is very good, so much so I took home a growler which I could not stop drinking into the wee hours. Yeah for beer!

On tap. Pours a darker amber to brown with no head at all. Nose is sweet caramel and molasses, with some brown sugar and spice with slight clove. Taste is pretty sweet with a touch of tart and a low, low bitterness. Palate features some alcohol heat, thin and not heavy at all for the abv. Overall, I liked this one. It has almost a dessert-like sweetness, but the palate wasn’t very strong considering how big the beer is. Still, a nice one that I would definitely try again.

Draft. Poured hazy reddish brown color with an average creamy light brown head that mostly lasted with excellent lacing. Moderate dark fruit, candy sugar and chocolate aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture with soft carbonation. Medium to heavy dark fruit sweet flavor with a medium to heavy sweet finish of moderate duration. Very interesting beer.

6 oz pour on tap at the brewpub (Sawyer, MI). Pours a rich brownish dark hue, a good haze, with darker copper glowing edges, brownish with a decent frothy tannish head, dies to a film, laces ok though. Aromas are fruity and biscuity, offering some toast and caramel, gentle pear, apple, cocoa. Faint waft of dark fruit, mellow spice, soap, more spicy Belgian yeast. Touches of candi sugar. Initial is fuller bodied offering a potent sweetness and toast up front, some cocoa and a good healthy dose of plum and dark fruit. A touch of dark black cherry, some spice, caramel and toffee. Mellow bread, toast, biscuits. Middle and back start to show more budding red and dark fruit, plums and toffee, caramel, and a touch of dry toast, spice, some vanilla, and brown sugar. Finish is dried a bit, mellow sweetness. I actually enjoyed this morn than expected. Nice.
