4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 BBB63 (5028) - La Porte, USA - OCT 2, 2011
Tap (many times over by now): Hazy deep amber nearly brown with a small off white head and clingy lace. The aroma has big notes of resiny and grapefruit hop esters, caramel, biscuit, roast, aromatic malts with a touch of molasses, plum, raisin, and earthy yeast vapours. Wonderful balance between the sharp and fruity hops, twangy molasses, and smooth malt profile. Almost comes off as a young barleywine and has some earthy and tobacco undertones too. Crisp and mostly clean hop profile on the finish. The mouth feel is lively, aggressive and biting, a bit warming too. This rocks, too bad I can get a growler to go for I could dig drinking this all weekend.

Draft sample at GB. Poured hazy dark brown color with an average frothy light brown head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate to heavy toasted sweet malt with earthy hop aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy complex bittersweet flavor with a medium to heavy bittersweet finish of moderate to long duration. This is a standout beer.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 TheAlum (3299) - Lisle, Illinois, USA - OCT 2, 2011
Full pint on tap at the brewpub courtesy of BBB (Sawyer, MI). Thanks! Pours a rich dark ruby brown hue, copper edges and bottom, healthy glow and haze. A frothy tannish head sits atop, dies to a decent layer and laces ok. Aromas are a touch of heat, dry hops, Centennial mix with touches of sweetness, brown malts, molasses, touch of dark fruit, biscuits. Iniitial is a mellow malt profile, touches of brown malt, toffee, some raisins, moving into dry hops, light florals, and toast. Some biscuits, mellow tobacco and earthy qualities. Finish is lingering molasses, dry hops, and dark fruit. Some toffee, biscuits, some toast, and malts. Finish dries up a bit more. Really nice for a strong ale, the alcohol hides very well. It doesn’t win in complexity, but it is an enjoyable experience.
