3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Silphium (2718) - East Lansing, Michigan, USA - NOV 15, 2011
Draft at Crunchy’s, East Lansing. Hazy medium-dark orange-brown body, thin ring of off-white carbonation. Sweet nose with caramel and brown sugar; also spicy and acidic. The body is a mess of sugar and spice, heavy and nondescript.

Tap. Woody malt aroma. Golden amber color with minimal head. Very sweet malt, ginger, and light grass hops flavor. Okay - a bit on the sweet side.

Tap and served in my Mug: Amber hue with some orangy highlights topped by a slightly fading head and spotty lace. The aroma has notes of ginger, coriander, orange rinds, asian pear, grassy and herbal hops, caramel, toast, and wheat malts. The taste has a nice spice versus sweet malt balance with just enough bitter and fruity twang to round it out. There is a lingering wheaty and caramel tone leading towards the big coriander finish. The mouth feel is moderately carbonated and smooth, slightly oily. A solid brew, Joe grown up. Still would like to see a tad more forceful caramel character however.
2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 TheAlum (3299) - Lisle, Illinois, USA - OCT 2, 2011
Sampler on tap at the brewpub (Sawyer, MI). Pours a nice darker amber pour, a good healthy haze, with frothy offwhite head, dies to a ring, slight cling. Deadened. Aromas are coriander, a nice spicy kick, with touches of wheat, flaked bread, some faint orange. Fairly simple, some touches of yeast. Initial is lighter end of medium bodied with heavier coriander influence. Spicy, some orange and flaked wheat come into play. A bit simple, the spice grows. Middle throws more coriander as it lingers on, spicy, bread, dough, flaked wheat. Finish is lingering cool coriander and faint orange peel, bread. Typical, a bit heavy for the style. Not my thing, just the coriander spice emphasized over complexity and balance. A bit of a wreck as far as quality goes but drinkable and doable. Not bad, just average and not something I’d want to drink much of or even really re-visit.
