3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
At the Olde School House, Aberdeen. Clear amber with a dense but fading white head. Aroma is strongly malty, with toffee and caramel predominate as well as some interesting notes of dried fruit. Taste is much the same, with a flash of citrus overwhelmed by toffee, heavier sugar fruits, and a rich caramel. Quite sweet in many respects, and slightly watery.

2 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20
Half pint handpulled on cask at The Six Bells in St Albans. Clear amber in colour with a white foamy layer leaving firm lacing on the glass. Malty base in aroma with some dark fruits. The same goes for the taste - smooth malt and dried fruits. Short bitterness in the ending. Very ordinary English bitter and this version was not that well kept at the pub - not fresh enough (29.09.2006).

Cask@George and Dragon, Thringstone. Golden reddish beer with a strong head. The aroma is lightly toffee hopped, and the flavour is smooth, watery, caramel and hopped. Overall a reasonable beer.

2 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20
Cask, Tut n’ Shive, Doncaster. Clear dark chestnut, thin off-white head. No aroma. Seriously, none. Oh wait, touch of malt there. That’s it. Balanced malt and hop taste. Sweet finish. Boring. Standard. Dull. Acetic and tannin in the mouth afterwards. Some fruit under that? I don’t know, because this is such a bad pint.

Kings Arms Melrose, this was slightly hazy, but had a good lasting head. An average pint really, nice maltiness with a soft fruit/hop finish. Ok, but didn’t think it worthy of a 70 percentile rating!

2.2 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
Cask at the Half Moon, Oxford. This was the only option while England was taking it to Sweden in the World Cup. Seems like this is a bitter made to resemble a belgian brew, as it’s got a bit of spicy, herbal hop flavor to it along with a good deal of yeast presence. There’s something incredibly sour in it, though, that made it nearly undrinkable for me. Glad I held back for only a half-pint.
