Allie (40), USA Nov 20, 2007 I had this for the first time a while ago, and didn’t care for it. I went back with a more educated palate, and found it more pleasant. I like the tall can design, which is very English and traditional. The beer looks excellent when poured, a reddish-copper color with a foamy, off-white head that lasts well and produces quite a bit of lacing. The aroma is interesting; the mild sweetness and hop bitterness make a nice mix. The flavor is clear and clean, fairly hoppy (at least to my taste) and quite bitter. There wasn’t much complexity, but it was smooth and the tail wasn’t bad. If you drink from the can, there’s a faint metal taste to the tail. The palate was a little more watery than I like. This is pretty good overall, but I don’t think it will be one of my favorites. Old Speckled Hen is less hoppy to me (I’m a low-hops type) and Fuller’s ESB remains my standard for a bitter.
AR (333), Georgia, USA Jan 8, 2009 Not too bad for an English Ale. There is a little bit of a fruity bight and also a taste of malt. The two don’t mix together very smoothly, but this is a pleasant-drinking ale, nonetheless. cfrancis (29), Gloucester, Ontario, Canada Jan 7, 2009 Really enjoyed this beer. Deep amber colour with a smooth palate and a honey taste. One of the better english beers I have had. Will have again Travlr (427), Washington, Washington DC, USA Jan 3, 2009 Fairly ordinary ale, very light fruit background, decent malts, but not much character. Not very complex. albertane (344), Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England Dec 28, 2008 Bottled. This is not nearly as good as the cask version; it definitely tastes pasteurised. The flavours are less fruity than the cask version also; here it is caramel and vanilla. Too strong to be a session beer anyway, after three bottles of this I was enjoying it less than the first one. RateBeerMan (23), , Tyne & Wear, England Dec 27, 2008 Not a very impressive beer. Light coloured, rather like amber in fact. There is just something rather unpleasant about Abbot Ale. Leaves an unpleasant aftertaste.
