Bottle, dark amber with a large off-white head. Strong pungent caramel malt aroma, not appertising. Not a whole lot better in the mouth, astringent and dirty malt characters. Some hoppiness, but bland and fizzy.

April 2009: I am having a Pale Ale day and this is my first one (Purity Mad Goose, Brew Dog Punk IPA and a Brooklyn East India Pale Ale to follow). The 660ml brown bottle was out of date by two months on opening and was poured into two vase shaped glasses, one a pint, the other a half. Looked fine, clear and mid-amber in colour, the head was almost white and full, staying for most of the tasting. Hops dominated the aroma, not ’in your face’ nasty, just a good harty smell (First Gold and Challenger are used). The hops are also the main feature of the taste, again not over the top. The beer has a good balance and all the ingrediants blend together to produce an easy drinking ale with a typical English IPA feel to it. At 3.6% you don’t get a huge mouthfeel or heavy body, but you would never guess it had such a low alcohol content. I am not a big fan of Greene King (for many reasons), but credit where credit is due, this is a good beer and one I have often drunk, although normally in cask form.

Swaroga (356) - Brussels, BELGIUM - APR 17, 2012
50cl bottle. Pours a light brown with a big creamy white head. Nose : toffee, dough, fruity cake. Sip : Low to medium density, creamy with low carbonation. The texture is a bit oily and enjoyable to drink. The taste is a bit sweet dry and little bitter on the end. Overall it’s a regular bitter with almost no alcohol but the texture is really good.

Aroma has bready malt, toffee and goldings hops. Flavour has toffee, some hay and hints of caramel. Surprisingly much hops for the style. But still yet another toffee-filled British bitter.

foxo82 (166) - Leicestershire, ENGLAND - FEB 27, 2012
UPDATED: FEB 29, 2012 Bottle from Tesco, Syston. Pours a clear brown with a slight reddish tint. Decent aroma of honey, ginger, a hint of smoke. All downhill from there, though - head is thin and uneven, soon disappearing completely. Initial bitter taste soon subsides to be replaced with...not that much. Mild honey/cardboard. Medium carbonation makes for a fizzy texture on the tongue. Too rough. Too abrupt.

Can. This is 3.6%? At first glance that surprised me. OK, after drinking it, I can accept that. Pours a nice, reddish-copper color, quite still, yet displaying a nice 1/2 inch pad of solid foam. The aroma is somewhat nutty, but fairly caged, not hinting at much at all. The beer drinks with a relatively thin body, a funky woodsy edge and a metallic finish. Americans expect something quite different from an IPA, and I’m glad to see this is stylized as a "bitter" because it fits that mold much more. (#4481, 2/22/2012)
