COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask.
This warming, full bodied ale has a reassuringly rich appearance and a mellow fruit aroma. Grapefruit and orange citrus tones combine with the floral and herbal Styrian Goldings hop variety deliver a reserve ale of exceptional quality with a dry, bitter finish. Greene King IPA Reserve is distinguished by a higher alcohol level, and this premium-strength ale feels and tastes more powerful, robust and warming. Very popular with ale connoisseurs, this darker ale matches beautifully with richer foods such as casseroles and red meats.

Cask at Ye Olde Bell & Steelyard, Woodbridge, Suffolk. Poured a clear copper colour with a small white head. Aroma of hops, caramel and hint of banana. Medium sweetness with a light bitterness. Body is medium, texture a little oily, soft carbonation. Finish of sweet toffee.

Clear deep copper color with a small off white layer on top. Flowery, sweet malty and faint citric aroma. Tad sweet and an ok bitterness. Medium body with a soft to flat carbonation. Sweet malty close to diacetyl, faint citric and nutty. Quite disappointing ale. Why call it an IPA when you forget to use a proper amount of hops.
[Handpull at Sawyers Arms (Paddington) in London, England]

Part of my 2013 backlog. Redish amber colour with a white head. Aroma was buttery and sweet, with malts. The taste wasn’t hoppy for an IPA more malty.

Red with large white head. Musty aroma. Slightly bitter for some balance. Getting used to the English hops, earthier and less resinous and fruity than what I normally drink.

Brown, slight amber glow, thin white head; taste is sweetish juicy malt and citrus fruit; still not that many hops for an IPA; it’s hard not to be prejudiced against this having had to endure a thousand handpumps for the awful basic product over the years; whatever, it’s a million miles better than it’s much-disparaged cousin; a nice full body, especially; pretty decent, in fairness.
