~Mellow, well balanced flavor of oak, caramel malts and earthy hops.
~Medium bodied with medium light carbonation. Very smooth, oak and earthy hop bitterness in finish.
~This is a good brew. Really mellowed out. I would like to try the two ales seperate. CanIHave4Beers (873), Des Moines, Iowa, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Nov 16, 2009 Pours a nice red color and despite the gushing bottle the beer has a small head and the beer goes fairly still after a bit. Overall it looks a bit like port. The aroma has some caramel some port, and lots of woody notes. Pungent but simple. The flavor is very oaky with some sharp tart notes. There are mild bitter flavors with some nice cork like character and a light caramel sweetness and light chocolate notes. Tasty stuff, I wish it weren’t filtered and pasteurized, with a little more character this could be damn near perfect. The palate is a little thin but slick. aphalo (82), Turku, Finland
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Nov 14, 2009 Bottle 500ml. Dark brown-reddish colour, beige head. Aroma has chocolate, dark fruits and some raisin notes in it. Flavor has soft malts, caramel; earthly finish. Practicly no hops at all. Surprisingly light bodied for vingate ale. | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Nov 10, 2009 Pours copper/ruby with a small but persistent creamy head, leaving lacing all the way down the glass.
Oxidative notes of port instantly hits in the rich, malty aroma, followed by grapes, burnt toffee, molasses, light roasted malt and soft alcohol. Very nice!
Flavours are similarly rich with burnt toffee, oak, figs, treacle and hint of roasted malt. Slightly bitter finish, but not in a hoppy way, it seems to blend in with the oak and roasted malt flavours.
A richer body would do wonders for this beer, at times it seems water, especially considering the robust flavours.

| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Oct 30, 2009 Dark brown with a little beige head that completely leaves. Smell is of some dark fruitiness and malt. Very light smell. Taste is actually great with some malty sweetness with notes of plums and raisins with a minimal hop bite at the end. Kind of a syrup thick mouthfeel but not as much as a doppelbock would be. Very good old ale. wattersla (11), Los Angeles, California, USA

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Oct 17, 2009 Sad to see this Vintage brew now living its dayz in a clear glass bottle. But cool that it does not screw the flavas and vibes too much. Theakston Old uesta be my favourite beer 7 years ago when I tried a dark beer other than Guinness or Murphys. A nice beige rocky head above ruby ...Big and stocky beer in character . A complex drink. But shit its meant to be a vintage ale , (at least they claim it still is) so it should be damn complex. Ok i’m getting chocolate covered raisins covered in earth. A chewey red winey texture iz full on ,often found in English Porters. There is a burnt toffee flavour -that’s almost slimey and sickly coz this beer is sticky ,then leading the drinkers taste buds to spicy, woody hop bitterness and a late showing of customary(for the Old style) banana esters . A grimey , interesting dark ale. The aroma is subdued , otherwise thumbs up.
