dark ale
A blend of two ales: Old 5X , which is brewed to the maximum strength possible (around 12% abv) and left to mature in 100-barrel oak vats for a minimum of two years, and BPA, a dark, full-bodied freshly brewed beer which is added just before bottling. The result is a unique beer - strong (6% abv), dark, fruity, oaky and very, very special.
Bottles have been sterile filtered since May 2006.

Bottle, 0.33l. Hazy dark brown color with thick creamy light-brown head and nice lacing. Aroma of caramel, toffee, nuts, mild roasted malt, wood and herbal hops. Taste starts with sweet and rich caramel malt, follows by ripe fruits, refreshing herbs, alcohol and medicinal notes. Mouthfeel is warming, while finish is moderate bitter. Full body, oily texture and soft carbonation in palate.Feels much more stronger than 6% ABV...

Clear dark brown with red sheen. Thin beige head. Aromas of treacle and dried fruit. Taste slightly more sour than sweet and bitter. Palate quite viscous, low carbonation. For the ABV, exceptional.

Bottle [thanks to my Euro Secret Summer Santa] @ home. Very nice deep dark red - brown color, medium sized off-white head that diminishes quite quickly. Aroma is malts, pretty sweet, slightly floral. Taste malts, sweetness, some alcohol, lightly a touch of wood, slightly leaves. Medium body and carbonation. Nice one.

Bottle 330 ml at home, poured into a snfter, ABV 6% Dark brown colour on the body, small beige head, with okay retention, light lacing on the glass. Aroma od dark fruits, light vanilla, alcohol, some wood. Taste is very sweet, with lots of dark fruits, prunes, raisins, nice vanilla notes again, a bit boozy too despite the relatively low alcohol. Mild bitterness on the aftertaste with quite long duration. Medium to full body, soft carbonation. Overall very good, pleasantly surprised.

Bottle at home from backlog notes 07/08. Pours a clear brown color with a medium sized off white head. The aroma and flavor have sweet malts, caramel, dark fruit, wood, thin body and didn’t really show anything until it warmed quite a bit.

11-JUN-2014, bottle @Fars fødselsdag, from Barley Wine. Clear, dark Brown with low tan head. Caramel, Brown sugar, bread. Too much caramel. Too sweet, almost no hops. Soft carbonation, medium body. I do not like this.
