COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle: Filtered.
Marketed in the United States as Olde Suffolk.
dark ale
A blend of two ales: Old 5X , which is brewed to the maximum strength possible (around 12% abv) and left to mature in 100-barrel oak vats for a minimum of two years, and BPA, a dark, full-bodied freshly brewed beer which is added just before bottling. The result is a unique beer - strong (6% abv), dark, fruity, oaky and very, very special.
Bottles have been sterile filtered since May 2006.

GoufCustom (949) - HONG KONG - MAR 28, 2015

330 ml bottle as “Greene King Strong Suffolk Dark Ale” bought at Market Place by Jasons in iSquare, Tsim Sha Tsui.

Clear dark amber copper colour with no yeast sediments; Less than one-quarter finger head with soapy beige foam which faded in 20 seconds; Good sticky lacing and near zero carbonation; Quite fragrant aroma of amber malt, with strong Port wine, red wine, caramel, light toffee, cherry, red fruits, sugar, wood barrel and faint grass; Close to medium sweet taste of rich amber malt, with very light tartness, quite strong caramel, dark bread, strong molasses notes, dark fruit notes, tasty light alcohol, traces of brown sugar, lime and light bitter grassy hops; Full body, quite thick palate; Mouth feel is wholesome amber malt with fairly good dark bread and caramel in a rightfully thick body. Dark fruits and sweet light alcohol blended well in the barrel-aged background. Simple, easy and pretty subtle!... Hoppiness is faint grassy nose, Lime and light grass in taste. Bitterness is matching moderate for a malty-bitter finish; Quite dry after taste. Fruity, malty and comfy bitter to mouth.

Comments: As a blend ale, I think this one is more than decent - amber malty with neat and nice Port wine aroma, expressive but subtle sweetness which mix seamlessly with hidden booze and fruity barrel taste. A nice winter warmer, this is a comfy and easy winner. Will buy again for sure!

Thanks John aka southbierbroski! Pours brown/orange with a tan head. The smell is molasses, dark fruit, slight licorice. The taste is dark fruit, caramel, molasses, very sweet in the middle ending with some dryness and tart fruitiness on the finish. Medium body, sticky with average carbonation.

I Like it. Liquorice, caramel, and a faint butter like taste not diacetyl. Head retention not impressive but nice golden foam.

Little head. Winelike aroma. Buttery aroma and taste. Fruity malt taste finishing with a mild bitterness and sweetness.

Didn’t strike me as a great beer. It’s not bad, true, but would’t call it good in any way.

SMAK: Masło, karmel, słodowość i odrobina wędzoności. Goryczka niska. Wysycenie niskie.
OGÓLNIE: Hmm...no nie wiem. Mało być "very, very special", a wyszło "very, very rancid butter"

Bottle 33cl. Brown with a beige head. Strong metal arome with some malt, but you have to wait a couple of minutes before getting to the malt. Quite rich taste, stillwith some metal flavour. After some time, the beer gets more drinkable and shows flavours of dried fruit, malt and candy. Medium length.

Poured from 500ml bottle. Opaque, dark brown with a 1-finger khaki head and good lacing. Aroma of toffee, dark malt, dark fruit and caramel. Taste of toffee, biscuits, dark malt, prunes, plums, mild smoked meat and caramel with a sweet nutty finish. Medium body and medium carbonation. Very malty, but wit an interesting complex character. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
