Commercial Description:
Bottle: Pasteurised.
Marketed in the United States as Olde Suffolk.
A blend of two ales: Old 5X , which is brewed to the maximum strength possible (around 12% abv) and left to mature in 100-barrel oak vats for a minimum of two years, and BPA, a dark, full-bodied freshly brewed beer which is added just before bottling. The result is a unique beer - strong (6% abv), dark, fruity, oaky and very, very special.

Bottle bought at the Utah State liquor store. Pours a deep ruby hue with a medium light brown head. The aroma is pretty light; mostly caramel and oak. The taste was quite a surprise; a ton of flavors, sour cherry/woody aspects like a Flemish sour, sweet caramel and and lingering sweet candy finish. Pretty damn good, and very interesting.

Pours dark with a heavy malty nose. Well blended and goes down easy. I don’t normally like heavily malted beer, but this was quite good. Weak head, but seems part of the style. Creamy, not watery. The key here is an exceptional balance. Probably the best beer available in Peru, for example, and fit the weather in a Lima winter nicely. UPDATE: Wasn’t at the Miraflores grocer when we returned...so maybe not in Peru regularly?

Pours a deep red/dark brown with a small off-white head that doesn’t bother to stay long. That’s fine, though. Aroma is notably sweet with a hefty air to it. Flavor is also primarily sweet, but not overdone. Palate is thin, but enveloping at the same time - making for a sweet, yet easy to drink brew that is impressively satisfying. Almost tastes like an ale that would normally have a higher alcohol content, but... well, neither alcohol, nor hops really seem to be a factor in the flavor. Leaving more room for focusing on the malt/fruit blend, which they seem to have done a great job on. Very tasty.

(Bottle at Gallows Bird on 2008-04-09) Dark golden red colour. Very weak head. Very sweet nose. Dryish palate. Sweet taste at the beginning. Moves toward roasted malts.

Bottle brown, 500 ml%
Appearance:Head is quite frothy and weak, quickly disappearing, carbonation is weak but quite standard sa for bottle conditioned Ale, body is dark ruby, mahogany, chockolate, coca - cola, body is full, lacing is rather weak, the body is not transparent, rather opaque.
Aroma:Some fruits, dark bread, toasts, very bready like the fresh inside of the bread, roastiness, caramel, plums, cherry, very mild hint of alcohol, wallnuts.
Flavour:Again very bready, some roastiness but very soft, alcohol is very well build in, soft, very nice, long, bready or accidic bready aftertaste that booms on your palate, very intense flavour, caramel, coffee, flavour of some wallnut and some oak from the barrel, so me well build in malty sweetness and almost non existant hints of hops.
Palate:Very soft and creamy with nice, deep, long aftertaste, very long finish, the warmer- the better. The overall impression is very good, as compared to Grimbergen Dubel. The fruit palate is lower and the level of yastiness is lower, some wheat malts and banana.

50 cL bottle. Pours clear and golden red with a lacing white head. Alcohol and overripe fruity dense aroma. Fruity flavour with a light metallic note. Alcohol presence and warmth towards the finish. More of the same overripe fruit into the finish. Distinct warming alcohol presence in the far finish. Nice, smooth and flavour/powerful.
