Commercial Description:
Bottle: Pasteurised.
Marketed in the United States as Olde Suffolk.
A blend of two ales: Old 5X , which is brewed to the maximum strength possible (around 12% abv) and left to mature in 100-barrel oak vats for a minimum of two years, and BPA, a dark, full-bodied freshly brewed beer which is added just before bottling. The result is a unique beer - strong (6% abv), dark, fruity, oaky and very, very special.

500 ml bottle. After reading some of the ratings here I checked 3X to make sure I got the right beer. How can this be a 94? Anyway, pours a clear, dark amber with a tan head. The nose and flavor are softly nutty, uninteresting. Slightly oaky with vanilla notes. I found this to be a boring, uninspired beer - drinkable, but not worth drinking again.

A brown like cola with a fine head. The nose is sweet and fruity. The flavor is strong, Sweet caramel vanilla butterscotch, with dried fruits--prunes? Nicely topped with an mild alcohol content; dry finish. Nice complex ale.

Rated 1/16/06: I debated for some time in the store if I should purchase a bottle of this or not. I’m glad that I decided to! Pours a dark red almost purple with a decent head and good lacing. I let the beer warm up in the glass for a bit, the aroma is very fragrant. Feels smooth going down and finishes even smoother. Very drinkable indeed, and the flavor is nothing short of spectacular. The blend of two ales must be the key with this one cause there is a fresh hoppy taste followed directly by a strong smooth burst. Almost finishes like a whiskey or a dry wine, I can’t quite put my finger on it but it works well. This beer is a bit pricey for my liking but it worth every penny to enjoy once in a while.

Pours a deep ruby red with minimal tan head. Has a tart cherry, sweet fruit, aroma. Flavor is fruit, cherries, tart, sweet, some oak. Medium, nicely carbonated body. Greatly enjoyable, could drink it all night.

Sampled on 4/10/07. The beer pours to a very dark chestnut/mahogany body with a thin tan head. The aroma has some nice funk, honey, and light tart cherries. The flavor is light and mineral laden, lightly tart cherry and oak, silky. The palate is lightly tart, moderately bodied, and nicely textured.
