Commercial Description:
Bottle: Pasteurised.
Marketed in the United States as Olde Suffolk.
A blend of two ales: Old 5X , which is brewed to the maximum strength possible (around 12% abv) and left to mature in 100-barrel oak vats for a minimum of two years, and BPA, a dark, full-bodied freshly brewed beer which is added just before bottling. The result is a unique beer - strong (6% abv), dark, fruity, oaky and very, very special.

The pour reveals a clear dark brown color with ruby highlights and a thin beige head. Good aroma of plums, toffee and roasted malt. The flavor is good and has a nice balance of toffee, plums and roasted malt and it finishes bitter. The body is light to medium with a vinous texture and soft carbonation. A well-made and enjoyable old ale.

Winey, almost port aroma. A bit musty. Brown color, but with strong light it is ruby red. The beige head left rather quickly. Starts with thin pluminess. Turns sort of chocolatey cherry in a thin sort of way. Undernote of sour, but it is a pleasent note. Mildy fruity, smooth, mellow, nice mouthfeel. Refreshing. I think the oak is coming out after some time passes. Really nice.

Maybe the bottle I had went bad, but this cheesy, dusty, barnyard-flavoured beer had unpleasantly rustic tastes and a metallic property that ruined the overall effect. Not sure how it acquired such a good rep, but I’ll rerate a fresh bottle some other time.

Bottle from Systembolaget. Ruby & clear with a thick off-white foam. Aroma is fruity and vinuous, with notes of orange and wood. Medium bodied and quite smooth. Good balance with a slightly bitter finish. Delicious.

Pours a dark ruby with a tan two finger head, that settles slowly to a thin swirling cap, leaving behind a very nice webbing of lace. Smell; caramel, chocolate and cherries all come out up front. There’s a nice touch of an oakey dryness, and slightly vinous. Taste; theres’s chocolate covered cherries, caramel malts and dried figs. The oakiness is really blended well, and doesn’t become overpowering. A bit of a sourness comes out as this gets warmer along with some vinous qualities, and a little alcohol burn in the finish. A very nice, relaxing beer. Mouthfeel is a bit on the thin side, but this is still very easy to drink.

Dark brown color with small but nice head. Aroma is sweet and roasted, caramel. Flavor is sweet and caramel in the start and dry and bitter in the end. Full body with notes of vanilla and oak. Very nice beer.

version I had was probably quite old, lots of residue left from cap. Beer was clearly oxidized, but if partialed out had a rich complex flavor, carmelly and some fruit. Would have been nice without the ill treatment it had obviously underwent.

Deep dark reddish brown ale with a thick receeding moka head. A sweet pruney caramel malt with light vinous notes, a bit of licorice and alcohol. In mouth, a warming sweet brew, with sweet molasses, licorice developing later, with a sweet berry note, and nice extendend burned bitterness. A good offering from the Winter 2007 LCBO release.
