dark ale
A blend of two ales: Old 5X , which is brewed to the maximum strength possible (around 12% abv) and left to mature in 100-barrel oak vats for a minimum of two years, and BPA, a dark, full-bodied freshly brewed beer which is added just before bottling. The result is a unique beer - strong (6% abv), dark, fruity, oaky and very, very special.
Bottles have been sterile filtered since May 2006.

330ml bottle from Tesco. As the name suggests this beer is dark deep amber colour with a thin off white head. Aroma has sweet stewed fruit, the taste also has this, but had a alcohol warmth, that suggests more than the 6% abv. The bottle says blended with a proportion of 5X, just not sure what the proportion would be, low I guess.

330ml bottle purchased from Tesco, Irvine on the 4th September 2014. Chalice glass. Pours a crystal clear dark ruby in colour with a thin white head. Strong malty aroma with creamy notes of date fruit evident in the long nose. Silky smooth mouthfeel and poor lacing throughout. Dark complex malts deliver a moist, maltloaf base with strong vinous overtones of sweet raisins and fresh figs. There is a slight hint of earthy hop resins present in the short lived aftertaste. Finish is very malty and robust with smooth boozy warmth coming through. Strong vinous fruit notes with syrupy prunes evident. This is a great example of an Old Ale, just wish there were more varieties of this ilk out there!

DAA; Bottle 330ml. Pours dark brown with a minimal to moderate, creamy, fading off-white to tan head. Aroma is heavy malt and caramel, madeira vinious, dried dark fruit, oak and spice. Taste is moderate to heavy sweet and moderate bitter with a somewhat lasting and warming finish. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.

I was expecting a lot more from this ale. Falls well short of the Fullers and even further behind the Bateman’s Vintage. For a Vintage it came across as a little thin and lacked real depth of flavour. Also pretty flat.

Dervock (517) - Emu plains, AUSTRALIA - SEP 11, 2014
Bottle - pours ruby brown with a small short lived off white head. Lost of swee caramel malt, dried fruit and burnt sugar. Sweet up front, with a transition to a mellow dried fruit and a dry lingering finish. Full palate, covers the whole mouth mild carbonation.

CanCrusher (679) - Ilirska Bistrica, SLOVENIA - SEP 10, 2014
Bottle 0,33L. Dark, amber, mahagonycolour with small, light brown, frothy head. Aroma of sacher cake, cherry, chocolate and honey. Taste starts light sweet with a lot of dark fruits taste and finish light bitter, still fruity, but with a hint of chocolate. Full body, creamy texture and soft carbonation. Another masterpiece from Greene King.
