dark ale
A blend of two ales: Old 5X , which is brewed to the maximum strength possible (around 12% abv) and left to mature in 100-barrel oak vats for a minimum of two years, and BPA, a dark, full-bodied freshly brewed beer which is added just before bottling. The result is a unique beer - strong (6% abv), dark, fruity, oaky and very, very special.
Bottles have been sterile filtered since May 2006.

Been about 15 years at least since I last had this. Sweet Complex vinous nose. Similar in appearance to OldPeculier but murkier and with an almost caramel twist. Taste is deliciously old school not dissimilar to the nose but shimmering treaclesque with some unfortunate fizz at the end.

Appearance- dark brown, ruby tinge, fizzy beige head which diminishes. Aroma- lots of it- fruitcake, cherry, toffee, rum and raisin. Taste- full bodied, coats the mouth, lot of maltiness, dark cherry hints, plums, fruitcake, malt loaf, burnt brown sugar, quite smooth but with a bit of carbonation. Some bitterness but not overwhelming. Really good.

Bottle. Pours cola brown with small offwhite head. Aroma is intense malt, caramel, malt syrup and ripe fruit. Taste is medium sweet, light bitter, light acidic and light umami. Body is milky with soft carbonation. Finish is long and balanced bitter and sweet with notes of caramel, malt, brown sugar, coffee, nuts and ripe fruit. Just the way an English ale is supposed to be.

Cola red appearance with a fast dead head. Slightly soapy aroma and taste to it. Fruity and rich. Nice, almost as nice as crafty hen, but not quite.

Bottle from Tesco Enniskillen [130314]
Very dark caramel brown, ruby light through, clear, tan frothy head, some lacing
Aroma of dark fruity malts, soft yeast, bit of liquorice, touch of spicy hops, dates, quite complex
Taste of dark rich fruity malts, very soft yeast, dab of treacle, slight liquorice, hint of wood, soft toasted malts, dark toffee, dark hedgerow fruits, slightly spicy, dab of sherry, complex old ale
Palate - soft carb, medium body, smooth, quite sweet, some warming alcohol. Finish a bit dry, as main flavour, some more spice comes through and soft roast.
Overall - Very surprised by this, by far the best GK beer I’ve had
