Bottle: Filtered.
Marketed in the United States as Olde Suffolk.
dark ale
A blend of two ales: Old 5X , which is brewed to the maximum strength possible (around 12% abv) and left to mature in 100-barrel oak vats for a minimum of two years, and BPA, a dark, full-bodied freshly brewed beer which is added just before bottling. The result is a unique beer - strong (6% abv), dark, fruity, oaky and very, very special.
Bottles have been sterile filtered since May 2006.

Clear bottle. L: pours a deep mahogany, reddish highlights and a thin film of beige head. S: first up I get dark fruit, inviting raisin and plum. There’s a slightly sweet malt presence, and something vinious, I guess the oak aging. T: follows the nose well. The oak really takes hold, giving a dark red wine flavour, a tinge of alcohol. This sits over a lighter malt base with decent hop bittering. F: goes down wonderfully, nicely carbonated and lively on the palate, medium-full bodied, and a little warming. Like a jacked up ESB or British pale. Quite dry. O: I’d drink this again in a heartbeat. A really enjoyable ale.

Clear bottle. It pours a clear brown color with a short lived, bubbly khaki head. The aroma is kinda sweet with some dark caramel and mild notes of nuts, coffee and cocoa. Some fruity esters of plum and raisin bread. Maybe a light hint of oak. The flavor has lots of sweet caramel and some toasted/lightly roasted malt. Some plum and fig notes in the background along with some cola. Maybe some treacle. The body is pretty thin for all the sweet flavors going on. Only a light hint of herbal bitterness in the finish. Not a bad beer, but too sweet without the supporting body or bitterness.

Bottle on board Fridtjofen 02.12.15. Almost black, with a shine of copper. Diminishing pale brown head with large bubbles at first. Aroma and taste of dried berries, dark caramel, dark syrup and nuts. Brittle and roasted nuts in aftertaste. Still not too sweet and with good drinkability.

UPDATED: JAN 16, 2016 Spicy aroma with hints of Whiskey. Very rich flavor with almost oily texture and quite sweet. One of my absolute favorites.

Avermelhada escura. Espuma de média formação e persistência, creme bege. Aroma de malte intenso, amadeirada, uva passa, cereja escura. O paladar repete as impressões iniciais do aroma, evidenciando o dulçor maltado e amadeirado. Corpo médio, baixa carbonatação. Aftertaste persistente, tendendo para o amadeirado e uvas passa. Muito boa, imagino que em barril deve ser ainda melhor.

(50 cl bottle from Kervan’s; No visible BBD) Poured at roughly eight degrees into a Maisel & Friends tulip glass reveals a beautiful, clear dark copper body with two finger tan head that recedes to one finger but otherwise shows nice persistence. Aroma is mostly sweet with nutty and caramel notes. Oily texture, soft carbonation, medium to full body with a lingering sweetness. Aroma notes are definitely present in the flavour, which also has notes of licorice and a balancing bitterness, which comes probably from hop bitterness and oak. Nicely complex yet easily drinkable.

Strong Suffolk Dark Ale in Frankfurt. Dark brown caramel body with slight head. Nose is spicy, toasty, caramel. Taste is similar of brown sugar, caramel, malts. Quite creamy and clean. Alcy finish.

Cervesa amb tocs a fruites vermelles i a caramel, dóna la sensació que ha de tenir més alcohol. Cerveza con toques a frutas rojas y a caramelo, da la sensación que tiene que tener mas alcohol.

Where: Old Line Fine Wine Spirits & Bistro. How: 16.9 ounce bottle. Appearance: Stained maple, clear, rapidly fading head. Aroma: Smells like a musty, dark old bar, tobacco-y. Taste: Complex, brown sugar, tobacco, caramel, dark cherries, and oak. Palate: Full body with low carbonation. Overall: Rich and good.
