Commercial Description:
Bottle: Pasteurised.
Marketed in the United States as Olde Suffolk.
A blend of two ales: Old 5X , which is brewed to the maximum strength possible (around 12% abv) and left to mature in 100-barrel oak vats for a minimum of two years, and BPA, a dark, full-bodied freshly brewed beer which is added just before bottling. The result is a unique beer - strong (6% abv), dark, fruity, oaky and very, very special.

Bottle. Moderate malt notes of roasted and nutty, light hops and yeast notes of herbs and earth, with hints of toffee, brown sugar and cola. Head is average size, frothy, light brown with no lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is clear dark brown. Flavor is lightly sweet and moderately acidic to start, and finishes lightly bittersweet and acidic. Palate is medium, watery with a touch of creaminess and has a lively carbonation. A very easy drinking Old Ale, but why the added caramel color?

Bottle from Sainsburys. Proper Old Ale colouration - deep ruby brown colour with slight tan head. Aroma is caramel with molasses and rich fruit. Taste - think Old Peculier and you are in the right ball park. Excellent Old Pec copy and worthy of respect in its own right.

Bottle (500ml). Poured dark burnt copper with a decent sized, dense, frothy, lightly tanned head which lasted very well. Aroma was of honey coated cereal with banana’s, chocolate, buttery caramel, vanilla oak and a subtle fruitiness of tangerines. Flavor was a mild, earthy hop bitterness with rich toffee, roasted hazelnuts, chocolate, caramelized dates, sultana’s, dried pineapple and a woody finish. Medium bodied with soft carbonation, a dry mouthfeel, chewy texture and a good finish.

Bottle. Pours a very dark colour, the aroma is roasty with a hint of molasses, the taste is full of chocolate, dark fruit. Surprisingly bitter. Lots of flavour but not overwhelming.

Dark amber with a veil of brown foam. Nose is pervaded by ripe fruits and a oxidized note, all well mingling with a slight vinous hue. Well bodied, sweet, warming.
