Pours black with a little ruby where the glass is thin. Small off-white head that quickly disappears. Aromas of oak, vanilla, biscuity malts, and a hint of diacetyl. A little smokiness, as well. Flavor dominated by the oak and vanilla. Some slight toffee and licorice flavors. The oak imparts whiskey-like notes, which could also be likened to very sweet, flat root beer. Finally, an oak-aged beer that showcases the oak, in appearance, aroma, and flavor. Excellent beer.

Jan 3, 2009 Amber color with thin white head. Aroma of caramel and coffee with milk. Flavor of malt with some smoke and light coffee. Decent enough.

Dec 22, 2008 Bottle. Moderate malt notes of roasted and nutty, light hops and yeast notes of herbs and earth, with hints of toffee, brown sugar and cola. Head is average size, frothy, light brown with no lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is clear dark brown. Flavor is lightly sweet and moderately acidic to start, and finishes lightly bittersweet and acidic. Palate is medium, watery with a touch of creaminess and has a lively carbonation. A very easy drinking Old Ale, but why the added caramel color?

Dec 11, 2008 Bottle from Sainsburys. Proper Old Ale colouration - deep ruby brown colour with slight tan head. Aroma is caramel with molasses and rich fruit. Taste - think Old Peculier and you are in the right ball park. Excellent Old Pec copy and worthy of respect in its own right.
