DarkStar22769 (93), Ontario, Canada Dec 6, 2006 Pours a dark reddish-brown, almost on par with Wellington’s Old Duke, with a very thin head that builds on the edge of the glass. The sweet malt aroma is complicated and layered with suggestions...caramel, cherry, vanilla. Hops are not present. Flavour is coffeeish with a licorice swallow. Very spicy and the palate is thin. Overall, an interesting seasonal. It’s not my favourite seasonal but I would drink more of it.
Travlr (427), Washington, Washington DC, USA Jan 3, 2009 Amber color with thin white head. Aroma of caramel and coffee with milk. Flavor of malt with some smoke and light coffee. Decent enough. glennmastrange (491), hobe sound, Florida, USA Dec 22, 2008 Bottle. Moderate malt notes of roasted and nutty, light hops and yeast notes of herbs and earth, with hints of toffee, brown sugar and cola. Head is average size, frothy, light brown with no lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is clear dark brown. Flavor is lightly sweet and moderately acidic to start, and finishes lightly bittersweet and acidic. Palate is medium, watery with a touch of creaminess and has a lively carbonation. A very easy drinking Old Ale, but why the added caramel color? Bier brauen (157), Bremerton, Washington, USA Dec 20, 2008 Bottle. Nice and smooth. Not too carbonated. Dark ruby color, disapating head. Plumy! rosenbergh (199), Helsinki, Finland Dec 14, 2008 Bottle. Dark brown colour. Very nice buttery/caramel aroma. Taste dark and caramel. EFC1878 (176), Manchester, Greater Manchester, England Dec 11, 2008 Bottle from Sainsburys. Proper Old Ale colouration - deep ruby brown colour with slight tan head. Aroma is caramel with molasses and rich fruit. Taste - think Old Peculier and you are in the right ball park. Excellent Old Pec copy and worthy of respect in its own right.
