COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle: Filtered.
Marketed in the United States as Olde Suffolk.
dark ale
A blend of two ales: Old 5X , which is brewed to the maximum strength possible (around 12% abv) and left to mature in 100-barrel oak vats for a minimum of two years, and BPA, a dark, full-bodied freshly brewed beer which is added just before bottling. The result is a unique beer - strong (6% abv), dark, fruity, oaky and very, very special.
Bottles have been sterile filtered since May 2006.

UPDATED: AUG 29, 2012 Bottle into nonic glass. Pours a clear dark brown with medium carbonation and a small tan head that fades quickly. Nose is chocolate, roasted malt and Sweet toffee. Taste is very complex, yet somewhat dull compared to aroma. Roasted malts, nuts, some warming alcohol, but the star here is the burnt toffee. Mouthfeel is thin and watery/oily with very little carbonation and not too bitter, there is some sourness though. This watery texture works very well with this beer though.

Bottle. Clear dark red/copper with a 2 finger beige bubbly head. Aroma: Licorice root, caramel, leather, dark fruit, raisin, buttery toffee, some faint vanilla bourbon. Taste: sweet, caramel, licorice, burnt sugar, slight woody finish. Mouthfeel is sticky and medium bodied with slight frisk carbonation. Oily. Mostly sweet and without any finer nuances.

Nice dark colour and strong flavour. Very good for a dark, damp winter evening. Poured from bottle to glass

Aromat winne, brandy, suszone owoce, śliwki, trochę drewna. W smaku słodkie z lekką nutą kwaskową, trochę winne. Fajnie rozgrzewające, ale nie czuć alkoholu. Ciekawe piwo.

Dark brown. Beige head. Aroma beef jerky, water, smoke, malts. Taste is sweet at the beginning and finishes with light to medium bitterness. Notes of berries. There were some kind of taste what I didn’t like. Couldn’t figure out.

A dark reddish brown coloured beer with a frothy light beige head. A light malty aroma, plenty of dark caramel, toffee, red fruit and toasted bread. Medium mouthfeel. A dry taste to start, nutty and toasted bread is followed by a mouth filling smooth flavour of red fruit, caramel and toffee. The finish is smooth with the fruit and caramel lingering on.

Is it a Jag thing? (You know, jaguar, as in British). Because it’s not that special. Yes its easy going, nice, but there’s little smell of sugars and tastes a bit mild and perhaps pleasant, is it oak-y? Still, not great or something to rave about although the price is lower. Weird thing this.

Miedziane z beżową, obfitą pianą. W aromacie głównie nuty słodowe - suszone owoce, bakalie oraz toffi, rodzynki, nuta wanilii i czerwone owoce. W smaku raczej słodkie z subtelną owocową kwaśnością. Goryczka na finiszu średnia, ziołowa. Ciało dość pełne. /// Pours copper with beige head. Aroma is malty notes - dried fruits, raisins, nuts and other smells: toffee, vanilla, red berries. Taste is generally sweet with subtle fruity sourness. Bitterness is medium, herbal, mostly appears on finish. Pretty full body.

HonusWagner (1630) - Florida, USA - NOV 22, 2014
Toffees and those Werthers hard caramels mostly dominate. The lower abv and lighter body of this beer make it feel more like some kind of scotch/scottish ale middle ground rather than an Old Ale. Pretty solid.

Kolor rubinowy, klarowne. Piana obfita, brazowa, szybko opada do cienkiej obraczki, ale za to niezle oblepia szklo. W aromacie glownie karmelowe i kartonowe, pojawiaja sie delikatne nuty suszonych owocow, najbardziej sliwek i daktyli, minimalne nuty drzewne. W odczuciu gladkie, lekko sliskie, choc diacetylu chyba nie ma, dosc wytrawne, a przynajmniej nie slodkie. W smaku przede wszystkim karmel, polaczony z wyrazna, dosc wysoka cierpkoscia, ktora sprawia winne, lambicowe wrazenie, do tego lekkie rozgrzewanie alkoholowe. Wysokie wysycenie, ale ogolnie calkiem niezle sie to pije.
